He's the main reason I'm at Ascot today – Jim Crowley preview

15 Jul 2023
Coral Racing Ambassador, Jim Crowley, previews his six rides at Ascot today including Aldaary in the Group 2 Summer Mile Stakes.

A busy day at Ascot, with six rides to look forward to, and hopefully they’ll get a bit of rain at the track, as a few of mine would appreciate some ease in the ground.

13:45 Ascot – Arecibo

Arecibo hasn’t got his nose in front for a couple of years, but he’s run OK the last two times and is slowly falling down the weights. This is a valuable prize so it’s attracted a competitive field, but if things fall right for Arecibo he could have an each way chance.

14:20 Ascot – Aldaary

This fellow is the main reason I’m at Ascot today. I thought he ran really well at Newmarket last time, it was his first run for over 400 days so it was no surprised he tired late on. He’d definitely enjoy some ease in the ground, but this trip will suit him. While Master Of The Seas is the one to beat, we’re rated a pound higher but get three pounds from him here.

The rest of the field are either horses with a point to prove or handicappers stepping up in grade, but I retain plenty of confidence in Aldaary and I expect him to run a big race, assuming he doesn’t ‘bounce’ after that comeback run.

14:55 Ascot – City House

City House ran a decent race at Doncaster first time up, and I’d expect a James Fanshawe runner to improve plenty for a debut run as well. Although this is a race full of newcomers and lightly raced youngsters, my fellow should benefit from the experience and a big run would be no surprise.

16:05 Ascot – La Yakel

A nice ride to pick up for Sheikh Ahmed, La Yakel is making his first start of the season but he was a two time winner as a 3-y-o, including a course and distance success here in September. He then ended his campaign with a decent fourth at Newmarket, and while this is his first start for nearly 300 days, William Haggas’ horses are running well, we’re drawn well in 1 and I’m looking forward to this.

16:40 Ascot – Mountain Queen

This Tom Dascombe-trained filly ended last season with a win at Wolverhampton, and she’s run well on all three starts this year without getting her head in front. She seems versatile in terms of going and trip, and while this is another open looking contest, Mountain Queen will hopefully run her usual consistent race.

17:15 Ascot  Sayifyouwill

It’s another competitive handicap to finish the day off, this time over seven furlongs. Sayifyouwill has won on good to firm and the all-weather, so she’s another who seems versatile ground-wise. This is her trip, so hopefully she can run well for sister-in-law Amanda Perrett.
