Coral Ambassador Blog | Newbury Super Saturday

07 Feb 2026
It's Super Saturday at Newbury this weekend and all three of Coral's Racing Ambassadors are heading there for the big day! Get the inside scoop on the runners and rides of Joe Tizzard, Sean Bowen & Brendan Powell below.

JOE TIZZARD: 'HE'LL APPRECIATE SOFTER GROUND AND THE STEP UP HERE'

15:55 Newbury – U Cant Be Serious

The form of U Cant Be Serious’ two Exeter wins this season has worked out well and then he just found the ground too lively at Kempton on Boxing Day, where it all unfolded too quickly for him. He’ll appreciate softer ground here, along with the step up to near three miles and as a result I think he’s got a decent chance here. Fred [Gingell] normally rides him and as he’s unavailable we’ve booked Sam Twiston-Davies.

16:30 Newbury – No Way Jay

No Way Jay is a lovely young horse who won his debut well at Wincanton before running a good fourth in a Listed bumper at Ascot in December. This is the same grade, and with the Ascot winner [Bass Hunter] not reopposing here, I’d be hopeful our fellow can be placed again. But whatever he does, he’ll be an exciting novice hurdler next season.

SEAN BOWEN: 'I THINK THIS RACE COULD END UP BEING THE BEST THING FOR HIM'

13:35 Newbury – Kapal Layar

I start the day on Kapal Layar, who was in decent form last season. He hasn’t quite shown that level yet this time around, but I still thought he was nicely handicapped at the end of last year. He’s had a run under his belt now which should have sharpened him up and hopefully he can get back to something like the form he showed last season.

14:10 Newbury – Haiti Couleurs

It was obviously frustrating last week, as pretty much everything that could go wrong ahead of his trip for the Irish Gold Cup, did go wrong. That said, I think this race could end up being the best thing for him. He’s only got a short trip to Newbury this time, the ground shouldn’t be as bad and it will be a nicer prep run as we build towards the Gold Cup.

L’Homme Presse is our biggest rival here. He ran a good race at Cheltenham last time in the Cotswold Chase, and he is a good marker for us ahead of the Gold Cup. I am really excited for this ride, and hopefully we can head to Cheltenham with another victory behind him.

14:45 Newbury – Libberty Hunter

Libberty Hunter can be a little hit-and-miss with his jumping, but on his day he’s a very good horse. There are some strong runners in this, with Lulamba looking the one to beat, but if my horse puts his best foot forward and jumps cleanly I think he’s capable of giving them all a good race. Harry Cobden normally rides him, but he is on board the JP McManus-owned runner, Meetmebythesea, so this a great spare ride to pick up in a Grade Two contest.

15:20 Newbury – Go Dante

Go Dante has been very good to me over the last year or so and has given me a couple of nice wins. He’s obviously higher in the handicap now than when he’s featured in this race before and is near the top of the weights, which wouldn’t have been the case in the past.

One thing that will definitely suit him is the very soft ground, he’ll absolutely love it and if there is a strong gallop too it will play into his strengths. It’s a competitive race, but hopefully things will fall right for him.

15:55 Newbury – Pour Les Filles

Pour Les Filles made a brilliant chasing debut at Ffos Las and I was really pleased with his jumping. One of Evan Williams’ horses came down, and it was hard to say whether I had him beaten at that stage but he did everything right. He should improve for that run, and I think he’s well capable of running a nice race here.

BRENDAN POWELL: 'HE STAYS WELL AND THERE'S NO REASON HE CAN'T GO CLOSE'

13:00 Newbury – Typhoon Warrior

The first of my three rides on Saturday is for Dan Skelton, and it’s obviously great to pick up a ride for the leading trainer. Typhoon Warrior hasn’t run on ground this soft yet but he finished a good third at Market Rasen on his hurdling debut last month, and I’m sure he’ll improve for that experience. He’s in the right hands to make up into a very nice young horse and we’ll learn a lot more about him in what looks a decent race.

15:20 Newbury – Lanesborough

Another lovely spare ride to pick up for another in-form trainer, Ben Pauling. Lanesborough has been really progressive this season, winning impressively at Doncaster two runs ago and at first glance I thought maybe he didn’t enjoy the step up in trip to 2m5f in the Coral Lanzarote last time but having spoken to Ben Jones [regular jockey] at Ludlow this week, he said the horse just didn’t travel as well as he can early on that day, so maybe he just had a bit of an off-day.

His performance at Doncaster earned him a ratings hike of 14 pounds. If he can return to that form here, which he has on testing ground, he should go well in what doesn’t look the strongest renewal of this race with the top weight rated just 138.

16:30 Newbury – No Way Jay

I haven’t ridden No Way Jay on the track yet as I rode The Walk, also trained by Joe [Tizzard] at Ascot last time, and Freddie [Gingell] also rode him when he won his debut at Wincanton, but he’s a young horse we like a lot. That Ascot bumper was one of the best bumpers run so far this season, so to finish fourth was a really good run. He stays well so he should get through testing ground OK, and there’s no reason he can’t go close.
