Cheltenham Festival | Road To The Roar: Newbury Super Saturday review, market movers and key quotes from winning connections
FROM THE TRADING FLOOR
We saw heavy ground for the big card at Newbury on Saturday and there were some impressive performances from a few horses that struck us as possible Cheltenham contenders.
Sober Glory took the opening race from Newbury, in the end stretching clear by 27 lengths. Undoubtedly impressive, he will face a very different test come March in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle, should he line up, and so we are currently 12/1 (from 33/1) for him to land the spoils.

Haiti Couleurs took the Denman Chase by a workmanlike 7 lengths and the bare form didn't feel anything special, so we left him unchanged for the Gold Cup post race. At 10/1 NRMB, the price appealed to several and we were forced to go 9/1 later on Saturday evening, which remains an industry top price for anyone still tempted to get involved at this stage.

Lulamba was one of the Saturday winners we were taken with, cutting him to 5/4 clear favourite for the Arkle. Despite racing on the deepest ground he has encountered in Britain so far, Lulamba still came out comfortably on top from some solid older horses and is really hard to knock on his three chase wins this season. He appeals considerably more than Warwick's Kingmaker winner, Steel Ally, who remains 16/1 for the same race in March.

The last horse worthy of a mention is Tutti Quanti, who was super impressive in the big field two mile handicap off of the top weight in the race. Paul Nicholls suggested he would be supplemented for the Champion Hurdle if the ground came up on the soft side, and given we are NRMB, some may see our 20/1 offering as a fair price if the rain does come during Cheltenham week.

JOCKEYS & TRAINERS HAVE THEIR SAY
Coral Ambassador, Sean Bowen, following Haiti Couleur's Denman Chase victory
“Haiti Couleurs was a bit cold in front on his own and he’s never had to make the running right from the start. He was careful at a few early on and warmed up nicely into it and then actually showed a turn of foot when they came to him and I was surprised how well he quickened. He’s just a good horse and he makes it easy for you. He’s going to be a horse that three-miles-two around Cheltenham, and then up the hill, will really suit him. Whether he is good enough to win a Gold Cup or not, I don’t know, but everything will suit him on the day.
He loves Cheltenham which is a big asset to any Gold Cup horse, he will stay all day and jump, and he just does things like a good horse. Whether he’s good enough after the back of the last we don’t know but he’ll definitely be there pitching turning in. You want to be riding in Gold Cups, and I have only ridden in one and finished fourth, so to finish a few places higher would be nice.”
Paul Nicholls, after Tutti Quanti's Newbury demolition job thrust him into the Champion Hurdle picture
“He’s just one of those big, backward type of horses who has been physically improving and getting better all the time and I still think there is more to come from him. He obviously likes cut in the ground, keeps galloping and travels well – it was a smart performance. I was a little bit nervous as the record books tell you off 12 stone it is hard to win a race like this, but he has annihilated them.
We have just said we could supplement him for the Champion Hurdle if we wanted to and the great thing about supplementing him is you only have to do it five or six days before the race and at that stage we would have a great idea about what the ground will be. If the ground was testing we might look at it, and I’m not saying we will, but we might. If the ground was good we wouldn’t. He would hold his own and it’s an open race this year as we know and if the ground was testing we would want him in there.”
Jockey Nico De Boinville after Lulamba made it three from three over fences in the Game Spirit Chase
"Lulamba is still a baby and we were desperate to get the run into him. It was hard work out there for a young novice against established stars and I thought that was a great prep. I thought he was a lot more professional up the straight and that should land us in good stead for the Arkle. Ultimately he's got class, and class saw him through today."
