Cheltenham Festival Market Movers | A golden performance and potential handicap clues

17 Feb 2025
With the big four days in the Cotswolds drawing ever closer, racecourse clues for this year’s Cheltenham Festival were in shorter supply this weekend, with Ascot’s feature race winner, Pic D’orhy, a prime example

Aintree rather than Prestbury Park will be his next port of call after his impressive Grade 1 victory, which also came as a welcome top level success for trainer Paul Nicholls and jockey Harry Cobden.

The Berkshire track’s other graded content on Saturday was the Reynoldstown Novices’ Chase. Coral ambassador Joe Tizzard was bidding to add to previous wins for the yard with Copperhead and Oscar Elite in this race in recent years with The Changing Man, and after three consecutive seconds in big handicaps this season, few would begrudge this 8-y-o what turned out to be a 24 lengths procession, albeit one that came following the early exit of favourite Jingko Blue. He has the entry in the Brown Advisory next month, but the handicap route of the Ultima could be the more likely option.

Wincanton was the venue for the Kingwell Hurdle, a race billed as a match between Burdett Road and Golden Ace. The former had been favourite all week, but on the day, it was the latter who was sent off the 6/5 market leader, and the mare justified that support with a battling victory over the boys. She’s 25/1 for the Champion Hurdle, and 12/1 for the Mares’ Hurdle, and for her connections, it was a big step back towards her Festival-winning form of last season.

Liverpool in April was again the focus as Haydock hosted its Grand National trial, although the winner, Famous Bridge, won’t get into the Aintree showpiece this season. The supporting Rendlesham Hurdle was won by Gwennie May Boy, and he’s 10/1 for the Pertemps Final, while his trainer, Dan Skelton, previously handled My Drogo. Now with Edward William Walker, he could be headed for the Festival Foxhunters after his Hunters’ Chase victory, a race the 10-y-o is into 16/1 for.
