Hugo Palmer Saturday Blog | Haydock & York

21 May 2026
Coral Racing Ambassador, Hugo Palmer, previews his six runners across the cards at Haydock and York this weekend, including his two runners, Laureate Crown and Penny Time in the Silver Bowl (14:20) at Haydock.

13:45 Haydock – Cheshire Dancer

Cheshire Dancer was a bit disappointing on her reappearance, I’m not sure she likes Newmarket as she was never travelling at all well that day. Haydock should suit her much better, she’s been placed on her two previous starts at the track, although this looks a strong race for Listed class.

14:05 York – Stardom Glory

Stardom Glory is a nice 2-year-old who we purchased at Tattersalls Book 1 last year. I think he’s certainly up to winning a maiden, and he could well be better than that. I like everything he’s shown us at home so far, greenness could catch him out on debut, but if he takes it all in his stride he’s a very exciting young horse.

14:20 Haydock – Laureate Crown & Penny Time

We run two in the £100,000 Silver Bowl. Laureate Crown is shorter of the pair in the betting and he’s done nothing wrong this season, winning his two starts since we had him gelded. He wouldn’t want it too quick, so he’ll get his ground here. We’ve been waiting for some softer ground for Penny Time, so he’s going to get that here too, and he’s another who hasn’t done much wrong this year as well.

In a race of this nature I think we can expect there to be a strong enough gallop, that scenario would certainly suit both of them and I’ve no complaints about the draw for either. Despite the difference in their respective prices, I think they both go there with chances.

14:40 York – Stratusnine

This horse showed plenty of dash at Chester last time, before slipping two furlongs from home, at which point Jason Watson quickly pulled him up. He’s absolutely none the worse for that incident, and he has an entry in the Wokingham Handicap at Royal Ascot, so we’re trying to get him up in the ratings to get him into that.

He’s done his racing over five, six and seven furlongs, he certainly has the speed for the minimum trip and he’s run well on his two previous starts at York, finishing second both times, so I hope he can run well again.

16:25 York – Mr Seagull

Mr Seagull made a perfectly respectable reappearance at Haydock last month. That was over a mile and he shaped that day as if the step up to ten furlongs would suit him, so that’s what we’re doing here. It’s a relatively small field by York’s standards, but we are drawn worst of all in stall eleven. Hopefully he can jump smartly, and Oisin Orr can get him into a nice rhythm. It will be interesting to see how he gets on over this longer trip.
