13:25 York – Calling A Star
My first ride of the day is on Calling For A Star, trained by my old weighing-room mate Richard Hughes, and she’s a two-year-old filly I think Richard thinks plenty of. She improved from her debut run to finish fourth here at York last time, not beaten far, and if she can take another step forward here, she could well be involved in the business end for a yard in good form.
14:00 York – Elmonjed
This fellow is the main reason I’m at York. He’s a course and distance winner, and he’s run consistently well in his three starts this season, finishing second at Windsor on the most recent of them last month, with a career best effort. He’ll have the tongue-tie on him here, which hopefully will help him find a little improvement, and a good run here could well set him up for a crack at the Coral Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood in seven days.
16:25 York – Master Of Combat
Master Of Combat has done most of his winning on the all-weather and will need to improve for his run at Haydock last time to feature here.
17:00 York – Pearly Squirrel
Pearly Squirrel couldn’t quite cope with a three pound rise for her previous win at Doncaster last time out, but she’s making a quick return so connections must be happy with her.
