12:45 Kempton – U Cant Be Serious
A busy Boxing Day with runners at three courses starts with U Cant Be Serious at Kempton. He’s won his two starts this season, both at Exeter, and both times he’s seemed to have got the job the done the hard way. He’s found a way to win, which I love, it’s a great attitude for them to have.
He can show a tendency to jump to the right slightly, so Kempton should suit him, and with Fred [Gingell] going to Wetherby, we’ve booked Harry Cobden, so that’s good news. He’s off top weight here, but he is a big strong horse who I don’t think we’ve got to the bottom of yet, so hopefully there’s more to come.
12:53 Wincanton – Blacksamssenorita
Blacksamssenorita is qualified for the Great British Bonus scheme as a British-bred mare, so there is some lovely extra prize money to be won with her. She won nicely at Uttoxeter last time, that was over two miles and we’re up another half mile here, which does pose a question mark, but she’s in really good nick and this looks the right race for her.
13:28 Wincanton – Wassailing Along
This mare was bred and is owned by my Uncle Robert, she ran OK in a bumper when trained by Anthony Honeyball, and while we’re starting her off over two miles here, in time I can see her wanting further. We’ll ger her handicapped and make a plan from there.
13:42 Fontwell – Striking A Pose
I wanted to make Striking A Pose into a chaser, but he told me in no uncertain terms at Hereford last time that fences weren’t for him, so we’ve taken the hint! Back over hurdles, this looks a good race for him, we’ve booked a young conditional rider, James Robottom, who’s been making the effort to come and ride out at ours. He’ll take off seven pounds, and if the horse is on a going day, he should be very competitive in what looks a fairly weak race.
14:03 Wincanton – Pedley Wood
Pedley Wood won on this card a year ago, that was over shorter, but he’s won over this course and distance as well, so we know he goes well here. He’s versatile as far as the ground goes, and he should come on for his Exeter reappearance, but I do think a mark of 110 is somewhere near his limit, so will be hopeful rather than confident of a big run.
15:45 Wincanton – Ugo Bingo
This horse also won on this card twelve months ago, when trained by Anthony Charlton, and he’s run OK without winning on four starts since switching to us. He’s another I feel is probably handicapped to his limit or close to it, but we’ll put the cheekpieces on him to sharpen him up, and if he has a going day, he’d be an each-way player.
