Star Performer of the Weekend

This weekend saw the Coral Sprint Trophy take place at York, as well as the latest renewal of the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket.

Racing at York kicked off with the Listed Coral Rockingham stakes, in which Karl Burke continued his stellar run of form with Jungle Drums taking the spoils. The colt made all of the running in the soft conditions on the Knavesmire, and kept on well towards the finish despite edging left in the closing stakes of the contest to win by close to two lengths over Hugo Palmer's It Ain't Two. Favourite, Bolo Neighs, was unable to make an impression in the closing stages and was beaten into third on the line.

The Coral Sprint Trophy headlined the card at York, and it was Strike Red who took the win in the final furlong when staying on best in the group on the far side of the track. Favourite, Room Service, mounted a challenge in the closing stages of the race, but could only manage second after having to weave through runners to get to the front, from the rear of the far side group.

Over at Newmarket, the Dewhurst Stakes was the highlight of the card, and all of the pre-race build up was dominated by the powerhouses of Ballydoyle and Godolphin, with the pair providing four of the final five runners in the race and Hugo Palmer's Seagulls Eleven completing the field. The decision to supplement Shadow Of Light the week of the race proved to be a shrewd one, with early price favourite The Lion In Winter being pulled out the morning of the race, leaving the leading Godolphin hope at the top of the market. Shadow Of Light duly obliged too, staying on in game fashion to beat Expanded by a neck.
