Star Performer of the Weekend

This weekend saw the highlight of the Summer at Newmarket, The July Cup, as well as the John Smith's Cup from York and the Summer Mile Stakes at Ascot.

The question is, who was your Star Performer of the Weekend and why?

At Ascot, the feature race was the Group 2 Summer Mile Stakes and Quddwah claimed victory in impressive fashion. The well-backed favourite breezed to the front when asked the question by jockey Callum Shepherd and won with plenty in hand. His next step looks to be the Group 1 Sussex Stakes at Goodwood where his price has moved into 10/1 (from 14/1).

Over at Newmarket, Ancient Truth completed a hat-trick of victories when winning the Group 2 Superlative Stakes. The Godolphin colt was always prominent and looked to be keen in the early stages, but still had enough left to win convincingly.

The Bunbury Cup followed this, and it was Aalto for the Ian Williams team who stormed home late on, going clear by 2 lengths inside the final furlong. He looks to be heading to Ascot for the International Stakes next. Mill Stream capped off a perfect day for William Buick as they partnered up for resurgent trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam to win the Group 1 July Cup, making it a double on the day for the Australian-born trainer. Favourite Inisherin failed to make an impact in the race and heads to Haydock next for the Sprint Cup, where he's a 7/1 shot for the trophy. Vandeek, who finished third on Saturday, also has the same target where he's the 6/1 favourite.

At York, Starlust took the City Walls Stakes in convincing style, winning by a length and a half going away from Rogue Lightning. Next up for the Ralph Beckett-trained colt is the King George Qatar Stakes at Goodwood next month, where he's a 5/1 shot for the race (from 8/1). Enfjaar stayed on well to win the John Smith's Cup for the Shadwell team in the next race on the card, beating out the favourite Botanical by almost two lengths. In the Group 3 Silver Cup at York, Alsakib won well from Al Qareem, who had drifted before the off. P J McDonald did well to hold the colt up in the early stages of the race, before finding space next to the rail to squeeze through and going clear.
