Star Performer of the Weekend
The question is, who was your Star Performer of the Weekend and why?
The feature race at York this weekend was the Group 2 York Stakes, where Shadwell star, Alflaila, won the race for the second year in-a-row under Jim Crowley with a gritty performance. Crowley held the five-year-old up in the rear of the four runner field for much of the early running, and started to make inroads in the final half a mile. He was third when being ridden into the final furlong but continued to battle under the experienced jockey to win by half a length.
Alflaila is expected to head back to York next time out for a crack at the Juddmonte International Stakes, for which he's now been cut to 8/1 from 16/1.
Over at Ascot, the Group 1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes was the undoubted highlight of the day. The race, worth a massive £700,000 to the winner, saw nine horses go to post, including three from Aidan O'Brien's powerhouse Ballydoyle stable, led by six-time Group 1 winner, Auguste Rodin.
The trio failed to impress however, with pacemaker Hans Andersen finishing last after trying to set the race up for Auguste Rodin and Luxembourg, who ended up coming home in fifth and sixth respectively. French raider, Goliath, put in a performance worthy of his name, travelling strongly under Christophe Soumillion throughout, before powering home to win with tons to spare, allowing the jockey to celebrate well before the line.
Auguste Rodin still remains in the Juddmonte International Stakes market, but following Saturday's performance he's drifted to 7/1 from 5/1 for the Group 1 contest.
