Star Performer of the Weekend

The main event of the weekend was undoubtedly the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp, and before that we were treated to the Group 1 Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday.

Three out of the six runners in the Sun Chariot Stakes had previously won a Group 1 contest, but it was Tamfana who was at the top of the market at the off and the David Menuisier-trained filly never looked in danger during the mile long contest. Tamfana tracked the early leader and eventually went ahead at the two furlong marker before getting ridden along with a furlong ot go. She continued to run on well and didn't look like being headed by Inspiral, who came home two lengths behind in second place. Tamfana has two entries on British Champions Day at Ascot in two weeks, the Champion Stakes, where she's moved from 33/1 into 20/1 and the more likely Queen Elizabeth II Stakes where she's a 6/1 shot (in from 8/1).

Over in Paris on Sunday, Bradsell was beaten for the first time in 2024 in the Prix de l'Abbaye at Longchamp by Makarova, trained by Ed Walker. In what ended up being a scrappy contest on the Sprint Course, Makarova stayed on stoutly in the closing stages despite hanging left to beat the favourite comfortably.

John and Thady Gosden claimed a 1-2 finish in the Prix de l'Opera later in the card, with Friendly Soul beating Running Lion for the duo. Both of their horses kicked clear in the final furlong of the race to battle it out between them, holding off the fast finishing Sparkling Plenty and favourite Fallen Angel.

Sosie was sent off favourite for the Arc, but it was Bluestocking who took the plaudits, after the filly was supplemented late in proceedings to challenge for the richest prize in Europe. Rossa Ryan put in a great ride on the Ralph Beckett-trained four-year-old and drove her out to lead in the final two furlongs of the contest after tracking the leader, Los Angeles, for much of the early going. She kept on well in the final furlong to make sure of the victory, which she eventually got by a distance of just over a length. Champions Day is next on the agenda for Bluestocking, and she's a 2/1 chance (from 4/1) to win the British Champions Fillies and Mares Stakes.
