Star Performer of the Weekend
The top-class action kicked off with the Group 3 Sirenia Stakes at Kempton, where Symbol Of Strength justified favouritism to win by half a length under Tom Marquand. Immediately following that, Kalpana claimed victory in the Group 3 September Stakes, quickening nicely inside the final furlong to win by an impressive 4.75 lengths.
The first Group 1 contest of the weekend took place at Haydock, with the Sprint Cup taking centre stage. Montassib provided the shock in the feature race of the day, having been placed in the rear of the field for the early running of the contest, before making headway in the latter stages and fending off Kind Of Blue at the finish to win at a massive 25/1. The William Haggas-trained gelding will likely be aimed at the Champions Sprint Stakes at Ascot's season ending meeting, where he is priced up at 6/1 (from 14/1).
Over in France on Sunday, the Group 1 Prix du Moulin was the highlight from Longchamp, and Tribalist won at a big price for Andre Fabre and Mickael Barzalona. The French-trained Godolphin runner made all in the one mile contest, and was well clear of the chasing pack three furlongs from home. Odds-on favourite, Charyn, could only get within 1.25 lengths of the eventual winner, despite staying on well towards the finish. Charyn's place at the top of the market of the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes market remains stable, with Roger Varian's stable star being priced up at 2/1 for the Group 1 on Champions Day at Ascot.
