WATCH: Cast No Shadow gets edged out in a thrilling photo finish at Southwell on Monday

Cast No Shadow

Cast No Shadow returned after a month off the track in the Class 5 Restricted Maiden Stakes (17:30) over five furlongs at Southwell on Monday evening for the Hugo Palmer team.

The club's three-year-old was the favourite in the race, eventually going off at SP 13/8, and he certainly looked like he was living up to the hype when he burst out of the stalls quickly.

However, he appeared to hit a flat spot around halfway through the race, and jockey Jason Hart had to get to work to keep him involved. When it might have looked like he was going to fade back through the field, he responded well to Jason's urgings and began to stay on stoutly from a furlong out, pressing Harry Davies' mount, Quercine, all the way to the line.

It was a nail biting finish, where eventually Cast No Shadow lost out by a short head, with the official photo confirming just how close it was.

His lucky 10 Owners for the Day didn't quite go home empty handed, however, as his second place finish still meant that Cast No Shadow earned them £244 each as part of the full Owner for the Day prize package.

What's next for Cast No Shadow?

Following his return to form on Monday, Hugo Palmer is sure there's a victory soon to come for Cast No Shadow, so he's going to be assessing the calendar over the next few weeks and will hopefully be able to pick out another suitable race for him before possibly putting him away until the start of the new flat season.

Stay tuned for the next update from Manor House Stables.
