From Kempton to Wetherby – this weekend's runners for Jonjo, Joe & Rebecca

13 Jan 2023
The second Saturday of 2023 sees our Coral Racing Club trainers in action across the UK, with Jonjo O’Neill and Joe Tizzard both represented in the 12:40 at Warwick. Gwennie May Boy carries top weight in this Novices’ handicap hurdle, although his task should be made easier by Jonjo’s son, AJ O’Neill, taking off seven pounds off his back, while Tom Cannon picks up a good-looking ride on Non Stop for Joe.

Jonjo’s other son, Jonjo Jnr, takes the ride on the yard’s three Kempton runners, beginning on Collectors Item in the 12:55. The 6-y-o was no match for Hermes Allen at Cheltenham in November, although there was little disgrace in finding the current Ballymore favourite too hot to handle.

Jonjo Jnr then dons the JP McManus silks for the rides on Petit Tonnerre in the feature Coral Lanzarote Hurdle at 14:40, and Head Law in the concluding 15:50. The former would have an each-way chance in this 20 runner contest, while the latter is having his first start since last April and may be best watched.

Sticking at Kempton, Joe Tizzard saddles Scarface in the Coral Lanzarote. Winner of his two starts before Christmas, he’d be another with place claims at double figure odds. Stable jockey Brendan Powell then teams up with top weight Slate House in the 15:15, a 2 ½ mile chase.

Rebecca Menzies also has a trio of Saturday runners, all at Wetherby, starting with Piaff Bubbles, who has another go at the three miles trip he was fifth over at the course at Christmas in the 13:57.

Rebecca then runs a brace in the 14.32. Stable jockey, Nathan Moscrop, takes the ride on Hasty Brook, who is back over hurdles following an unsuccessful attempt at chasing, while Sean Quinlan is on board Rafferty’s Return, the 8-y-o bidding to follow up his course success on Boxing Day.

Good luck to all our trainers, and their owners, with their runners this weekend.
