Diamond Days makes second chase start in testing conditions at Fontwell | Raceday Highlights

09 Dec 2025
Diamond Days was back in action on Monday as he made the short journey to West Sussex for his second start over fences at Fontwell.

Conditions were never going to be ideal on the day, with a deluge of rain coming in over the weekend creating a heavy going description on the chase course. Although not ideal, he has gone well on bottomless ground before when he came home in second at Lingfield on his penultimate start of last season.

There was a hint of confidence in the air before the race, with both trainer and jockey, Joe Tizzard and Brendan Powell, heading to Fontwell in scintillating form, as well as the positives that were taken from Diamond Days' chase debut at Lingfield, where he stormed home in the closing stages to catch the eye in the run-in.

Diamond Days jumped and travelled with enthusiasm through the early stages of yesterday's race and was seemingly coping with the sodden underfoot conditions quite well. He remained in touch with the leaders for much of the contest, before making a move into second behind Mutley Crew, the eventual winner of the race, who had gone a good five lengths clear in the straight going across the course. Diamond Days was one of two runners that went with Mutley Crew as the field approached the long, sweeping bend at the top of the course as they went for home, but he was unable to maintain his efforts as the leading pair dashed clear.

His efforts on the heavy ground were evident in the run-in, as he began to fade further behind, losing third place with two fences to jump, and then losing fourth in the very final stages of the race. He did however still manage to pick up £150 in prize money, meaning his lucky Owners for the Day each took home a share of those earnings.

Chris Wald, Joe's Assistant, got in touch with us this morning and this is what he had to say:

"Diamond Days blew quite hard after his run yesterday and back in the stables he was taking a fairly long time to recover. Due to that, we thought it was worth getting the on-course vets to pop a scope in his throat to see if anything showed up on that to explain the way he faded out of the race.

The results did come back with signs of blood, which would be enough to affect his performance and explains why he finished his race the way he did.

The positive news is that having checked him this morning, he's absolutely fine, so we'll look to give him a week off to recover following what was obviously a tough race and hopefully he'll be back and ready to go again soon."

Stay tuned for the next update fron Venn Farm as we'll be keeping in touch with Joe Tizzard over the next couple of weeks to see how Diamond Days is progressing.
