Jim Crowley Glorious Goodwood Day One Preview: I do think he can outrun his odds
Saturday was a brilliant day for Shadwell, with Hukum winning the King George and Alflaila taking York’s feature, so we head into this important week full of confidence. I had loads of confidence in Hukum going into the King George even though it was a really high class line-up, I said here that I wouldn't have swapped him for anything. The Derby winner [Auguste Rodin] and Emily Upjohn may not have run their races, but that takes nothing away from Hukum and Westover who served up a brilliant finish.
Now we have a big week at my local track. I’ve been fortunate enough to ride plenty of big winners at this meeting over the years so hopefully that will be the case again this year.
16:35 Goodwood Cup – Ocean Wind
I was on Ocean Wind at Sandown last time, and he ran a really encouraging race to finish third after a long layoff. He’s won on good to soft and soft so won’t mind the ease in the ground. While this is a classy Goodwood Cup, with the Ascot Gold Cup one-two heading a really deep field of stayers, I do think my fellow will improve for that comeback run.
While I’m not saying he will win, I do think he can outrun big odds.

17:05 Fillies' Handicap – Rowayeh
Rowayeh is a filly who we wouldn’t want too much more rain for, as she was a non-runner at Newbury ten days ago on account of the ground turning very soft. She’s won on good to soft so that would be fine, but with the forecast as it is, we’ll have to wait and see how things pan out.
I hope she runs, obviously, as she’s in great form, having won at Beverley and Sandown. The mile trip is perfect, and a five pound rise doesn’t look too harsh. Stall 18 in a big field over this course and distance is far from ideal however, so we’ll need some luck in running. If we get that, she would have a leading chance I’m sure.
