Jim Crowley Glorious Goodwood Day Two Preview: I think he will run very well

02 Aug 2023
Coral Racing Ambassador, Jim Crowley, provides an exclusive preview of his five rides on day two of Glorious Goodwood, including his chances onboard Aldaary in the Group 1 Sussex Stakes.

14:25 Oak Tree Stakes – Samedi Rien

Samedi Rien
is a Spanish-based horse who has some solid form. She was placed twice at Meydan in two very good races. I really think she is overpriced here, and that’s largely down to not many people being aware of her trainer or the horse.

This horse has won twice on soft ground before, so I don’t think we are without a chance. The only downside is she has stall 1, which isn’t a great draw. Hopefully, I can get a good position on her out of the stalls.

15:00 Molecomb Stakes – Shagraan

Shagraan is dropping down to 5f here after three starts over 6f. The way he has travelled in his races suggests this distance will suit him, I also don’t think he will mind any cut in the ground.

Clive Cox’s horses are hitting form now. This horse broke his maiden at Windsor two runs back, I then finished second on him at Newbury in a Listed contest. This is a good ride for me as I think he will run very well.

15:35 Sussex Stakes – Aldaary

Paddington is going to be very hard to beat in the Sussex Stakes as he doesn’t mind the ground and he stays very well, as he showed in the Coral-Eclipse over 1m2f last time out. My horse will appreciate any give under foot, the softer the better for him.

Aldaary will need to improve on what he is done but if Paddington and Inspiral underperform, he will go very close. I’ve had a lot of success in this race with three wins in the last six years, and I’d love to be lifting the trophy once again.

16:10 Fillies' Conditions Stakes – Looby

She showed some promise on her debut at Windsor back in June, but she then disappointed at Newmarket over the same distance. She is going to need to take a big step forward from her last two starts.

16:45 EBF Fillies' Handicap – Chips And Rice

She has been in good form this season with two wins from her last four outings. I rode her earlier in the season at Ascot where she ran a nice race on soft ground. She won comfortably last time out at Brighton, so the handicapper has put her up 6lb for that success. Hopefully, she can defy that rise in the ratings here.
