Jim Crowley Derby Day Preview: Military Order is the horse I'd want to be riding

03 Jun 2023

Coral Racing Ambassador, Jim Crowley, provides an exclusive preview of his sole ride at Epsom on Derby Day in the 14:10, as well as his thoughts on the Classic this afternoon.

13:30 Epsom – The Derby

I don’t think it is a strong Derby this year. Auguste Rodin has to take a massive step forward from the Guineas. I am not saying he won’t, but he was very disappointing at Newmarket. He is favourite, but I am not sure he warrants that position.

MILITARY ORDER is the horse I’d want to be riding in the race. I was impressed with what he did in the Lingfield Derby Trial. That was over 1m4f and he got better as that race progressed.

Sir Michael Stoute’s runner, Passenger, is interesting. I thought he ran a great race in the Dante where he was a little unlucky. He is unexposed as this will be just his third run and he's been supplemented for the race, so his connections must be confident.

Dubai Mile ran a good race in the Guineas where he was 5th and I think he will run a big race at a price. He could improve again over this distance and a lot of the horses in this race don’t stay, so I’d be looking for those who will appreciate the trip.

14:10 Epsom – Shaara

She is going to have to take a step forward on her last start, but I don’t think she was at her best that day. A few of John and Thady Gosden’s runners were needing the run in the spring and they're in great form now, so that is a good sign.

The filly won three races last season, including a Listed contest at Yarmouth. The Gosden team would not be running her in a race like this if they did not feel she was up to it. She has been working nicely at home and I'm hopeful of a big run.
