Raceday LIVE Preview

All The Glory heads south to Devon for her third chase start this afternoon, as she lines up in the Class 3 Mares' Novices' Chase at Exeter. We're very much still in the infancy of All The Glory's career over fences, but the O'Neill team are hopeful that with experience she will continue to improve, especially given the ability she's shown previously over hurdles.

She kicked off her chasing career with a solid run in a match versus the experienced Alastair Ralph-trained In The Air, who had won two chases already this season before lining up against All The Glory and was in receipt of nearly a stone in weight compared to our mare. Despite all of that, All The Glory finished just under two lengths behind the heavy odds-on favourite in what was an incredibly pleasing debut over fences.

Jonjo & AJ O'Neill weren't for slowing down following that performance at the start of October, and the father-son training duo entered her two weeks later at Aintree's opening meeting of the season. It wasn't to be for All The Glory on that day, as she made an unfortunate early mistake over the first fence and that  knocked her confidence for the rest of the race. She found herself quickly detached from the field, and so jockey Jonjo O'Neill Jr did what he could to ensure she got round safely and to help recoup some of her confidence for future races.

Raceday update and preview from trainer AJ O'Neill

"After a quiet spell for the yard, we're back in action with all our runners now, including All The Glory. She's been working well in the last couple of weeks, we lost a little bit of time with her obviously, but it didn't take much to get her fitness levels back to where we had her, and we're very happy with how she is.

She had several options in recent days. I think we did the right thing not taking on Diva Luna at Warwick, and of the three races this week we had her in, the Exeter race has turned out to be the smallest field with just three opponents. We weren't expecting so much rain, but as things stand the meeting goes ahead, so we've sent her on her way. She stays further than this trip today, so she should get through the very soft ground OK, albeit Jonj knows her very well and will look after her if need be.

This will be her third run over fences, which is important as it will open up more options for her, and we have a valuable £60,000 Mares' handicap at Windsor in January in mind for her, and she needs this third run to be eligible. That's a month away, so the timing of today works well also, so let's hope the meeting does indeed go ahead. Although there are only four runners, both Hollygrove Cha Cha and Bluey bring decent form to the race, but we're happy to take them on and I'm looking forward to seeing your girl back in action."

Four horses go to post for this Mares' Novices' Chase this afternoon, with All The Glory carrying the best rating into the contest. The four runners would be off level weights, if not for Bluey having won on her debut start over fences two runs ago at Kempton, meaning that she has a 6lbs penalty attached to her for the Novices' contest, and is officially 1lb worse in the ratings than All The Glory. At the other end of the scale, if this were a handicap contest then Asian Spice (NON-RUNNER) for the Jimmy Frost team would be running out from out of the handicap, as she's rated some 30lbs lower than All The Glory at a mark of 100. Hollygrove Cha Cha is the other runner in the field and caught the eye when making her Chase debut last month in a Listed contest at Carlisle, where she finished less than three lengths behind eventual winner, Resplendent Grey (Rated 147) and two lengths behind the second place finisher, Handstands (Rated 157), which will likely make her the fancied runner in the race.

Chris Dixon, Racing TV Analyst, looks ahead at this afternoon's 13:00 at Exeter and gives his verdict on the race

All The Glory couldn’t cope with the demands of the Mildmay fences at Aintree last time and will need to jump much better if she’s to get back on track here. The Exeter fences are much easier, so it looks like a good move to run her at this track while the reapplication of cheekpieces, which have been worn for all five career wins also looks like a big positive. Ground conditions will be more demanding than she often races on, but it was slow enough when she won at Southwell on New Years Day so it’s unlikely to be an issue and her stamina or further could well end up being an asset.

Hollygrove Cha Cha will be the favourite for the race ad she has an excellent strike rate, including a win in Grade 2 company back in February and she’ll find this easier than her chasing debut which came in a Listed race at Carlisle. Her jumping will need to improve, and she’ll probably be better suited by longer trips but she has an obvious chance. Bluey appeals as the other interesting contender and may well be the most appealing betting proposition in the race. A forward-going mare, she could get the run of the race in front, and her jumping has looked good in her two chase starts to date. That area of her game could put pressure on the others and with her latest Newbury form looking strong the case for her is easy to make.

Trainer and Jockey Statistics

Jonjo & AJ O'Neill
have had two winners in the last two weeks from a total of 18 runners. The last of which came at Catterick two days ago as the yard starts to slowly show some improvement following a quiet spell. The pair have a good record at Exeter, albeit from a small number of runners, with three winners coming at the Devon course from 10 runners.

Jonjo O'Neill Jr rode both of those aforementioned winners for his father and brother, however he hasn't been able to add anymore winners from other stables during the last fortnight. Jonjo has ridden 12 winners from 87 career rides at Exeter, but is still waiting for his first winner there this season.
