Raceday LIVE Preview

Following a six week break, it was a tough return to action back on the turf for the club's three-year-old gelding last Monday as Cast No Shadow finished last of seven at Windsor.

Previous to his reappearance, he'd had a productive campaign on the all-weather over the winter months, including one victory and two second place efforts, all of which came under today's jockey, Jason Hart.

After the race last week at Windsor, which was raced on good ground, trainer Hugo Palmer was quick to point out that the run could be a blessing in disguise. He mentioned that he had wondered if Cast No Shadow would prefer some ease in the ground, and given the way he performed, it looked as though that presumption could be true.

With the ground set to be Soft and Good-To-Soft in places at Catterick today, this looks an ideal opportunity for Cast No Shadow to bounce back to the form we know he's capable of.

In addition to that, he drops into calmer waters today, with last week's contest being a Class 4 Handicap for horses rated 0-85, and this afternoon's being a Class 5 Handicap for horses rated 0-75. However, that does mean he has to carry top weight (9st9lb) as he is the highest rated horse in the race (75).

Raceday message from Hugo Palmer

"Although he disappointed us a little at Windsor last week, Cast No Shadow has been in good order at home since, and it’s probably unfair to say he disappointed us as he just struggled on that quick ground. He’s been really fresh and well over the last few days, and he’s moving really well up the gallops, so he’s showing us all the right signs.

We do believe he wants cut in the ground on the turf, so that’s why we’re heading to Catterick today as it looks like conditions should be ideal for him, and we’d rather get a run into him now before the ground properly dries up.

We know he handles the all-weather, so we obviously have that option too, but opportunities at those tracks become few and far between as we head into the summer, so we really hope he relishes this test today.

He has a good draw in stall 3, and Jason (Hart) being back on him is certainly no bad thing, as he knows the horse well and has won on him, so we head there very optimistic. There are a couple of last-time-out winners in the race, so it’s not a bad contest for the grade, but we know he’s better than that last run, and if he can return to his best form here, then we certainly think he can be very competitive."

Cast No Shadow's Owners for the Day

As winners of the Owner for the Day competition, 10 lucky Coral Racing Club members have been given the chance to enjoy an exclusive owners experience for Cast No Shadow's run at Catterick this afternoon.

2nd: £1,964.80 | 3rd: £981.60 | 4th: £491.20 | 5th: £244.80

Trainer and jockey form

Hugo Palmer has been in great form over the past two weeks sending out three winners from his last 14 runners (21%). An interesting statistic to note is that in his career so far, Hugo has only sent 22 runners to Catterick, but five of them have hit the back of the net.

Jason Hart partners Cast No Shadow again in the saddle again today, and he's not been in bad form himself of late. Over the past two weeks he's ridden three winners, including one for Hugo at Newmarket during the Craven Meeting last week on 40/1 shot, Watcha Matey.

Jason has great experience riding at Catterick, with 56 career victories to his name from 386 rides, and that's a real positive for us today as it's not often the easiest track to navigate on.

Today's opposition

  • Vince L'Amour heads the market as the short-price favourite following his last time out success at Ripon just six days ago for the Tim Easterby team. With conditions to suit, he's definitely the one to beat.
  • Willolarupi is an interesting contender for trainer Declan Carroll, who's early novice form is one to take a look at. He finished well ahead of today's favourite over course & distance on just his second start last July, however, the yard have been quiet over the winter and haven't had a winner from their last 67 runners.
  • La Boo makes his handicap debut today off a mark of 72 following two fairly recent runs on the all-weather, but he's yet to run on ground like he'll face today so it'll be interesting to see how he takes to it.
