Raceday LIVE Preview

Cast No Shadow made his long-awaited return to action at the beginning of the month and despite coming home in last place, he showed plenty of encouraging signs. He broke alertly from the stalls that day and gave jockey Jason Hart a good spin from the front until the pair passed the two furlong marker and that's when race fitness duly got the better of our gelding. Jason eventually eased him down to allow him to come home in his own time knowing that he'd given his all.

That type of performance was to be expected given Cast No Shadow hadn't had a competitive start for almost 300 days, however, it will have no doubt brought him on in bundles ahead of this next start his afternoon.

Today's course and distance is like a second home for our four-year-old at this point. Cast No Shadow has won twice here so far in his short career, with the most recent of those victories coming last June. That was a gallant performance off of a mark of 74, where he showed fight and determination to stick his neck out in the final stages of the race when it looked like he might get swallowed by the fast finishing field. Since then, his handicap mark has dropped by 8lbs to a mark of 66, which is incidentally the lowest mark of his career so far, so we're hopeful that it won't be long before he can strike again and return to the winners' enclosure once more.

This evening's competition is relatively fierce with two horses, Castan and True Promise, who come into the race off of top weight as former course and distance winners. Those two join another five of Cast No Shadow's rivals as former track and trip winners, with Binadham and Albegone the only two to not win here previously. The former has posted two respectable efforts at Lingfield on his past two starts, and today will be his first venture to Newcastle as he drops into Class 5 company so there's no ruling him out. Cast No Shadow comes into the contest as the second lowest rated horse by the numbers, so we're under no illusion that he'll have to put his best foot forward to put something up against this field.

Kevin Stott takes the reins on Cast No Shadow for the first time tonight, having ridden just the once for the Coral Racing Club before when finishing fourth on Pop Star at Hamilton earlier this year. Cast No Shadow is drawn handily in stall five, and we know he has the early pace to break well and dictate the running of the contest, so being surrounded by others should help him to kick on in the early stages of the race, like we've seen so many times before.

Racing TV Analyst, Chris Dixon, previews this evening's 18:30 at Newcastle and assesses Cast No Shadow's prospects

Cast No Shadow was well held on his recent return from a break and has a bit to prove at present, despite a falling mark. This course and distance clearly suits well having twice won here and the absence of too many other front runners or prominent racers means the race sets ups pretty well from a tactical perspective. Those factors should give him every opportunity to show his best if he’s in the form to do so.

Tiriac is the form horse having won well here from a reduced mark last time and that effort was underpinned by a good time. He should go well under his 5lbs penalty and seems likely to uphold the form with runner-up Dandy Dinmont. Castan was comfortably beaten on his latest start but the ground was a feasible excuse for that run and this will be the lowest grade race he’s run in for some time. He’s likely to go well following a short break off an attractive mark and like Cast No Shadow, should be well-placed tactically.

Trainer and Jockey Statistics

Hugo Palmer
has scored once from seven runners in the last week, with that sole victory coming courtesy of Kindest Nation here at Newcastle last Thursday, which took his total winners at the track up to three and to 66 in total for the year. Historically, Hugo has been successful at Newcastle, with 50 winners from 300 runners at the course (17%) and he'll be looking for his 51st with course specialist Cast No Shadow tonight.

Kevin Stott has ridden three winners from 22 rides in the last fortnight, including a double on the card at Kempton a week ago. His total for the year is up to 34, with two of those coming at Newcastle, a course at which he's had 80 career winners at a strike rate of 15%. Stott doesn't ride particularly frequently for the Manor House team and has 5 wins from 36 rides in total for Hugo Palmer, with one of those victories coming this year. Hopefully he can double his tally for the trainer this evening with Cast No Shadow.
