Raceday LIVE Preview

After 280 days off the track, Cast No Shadow is officially back.

Our four-year-old sprinter was given an extended break following a difficult winter campaign, but trainer Hugo Palmer has been delighted with the way he's grown and strengthened as a result of his time off.

From the start of 2024, Cast No Shadow was in action during eight of the twelve months in the year, so it's fair to say he had a busy time of things for just a three-year-old. He won twice during his 3yo campaign, with both wins coming at Newcastle on the all-weather over today's five furlong trip.

WATCH: Cast No Shadow gets off the mark at Newcastle with impressive victory

Today's competitive contest includes a full field of 14 runners, with Cast No Shadow drawn in stall 9. We're pleased to have the services of Jason Hart once again who knows Cast No Shadow well having ridden him on 6 of his 15 starts.

In terms of the opposition, Spirit Of Applause heads the market who has a solid AW record with two wins from 9 runs, including a win over today's C&D. Invincible Crown for the Ruth Carr team has been in fine form of late with two victories from his last four starts, and Water Of Leith has now returned to his last winning mark on the all-weather (68) so he could be one to watch in the market.

Trainer Hugo Palmer gives us a pre-race update on Cast No Shadow ahead of his reappearance this afternoon

"We're delighted to have Cast No Shadow back on the track today. We've been really happy with him since he came back into training, he's moving really well, and he's definitely grown and strengthened up during his break.

Although he's been working nicely at home, we haven't put a lot of pressure on him so I would anticipate that he'll benefit from today's run. That being said, I'm hopeful that he will run well in what looks a pretty competitive heat for the grade so good luck to all the Coral Racing Club members and his lucky owners for the day."

Racing TV Analyst, Chris Dixon, previews Cast No Shadow's chances in today's 16:30 at Newcastle, and gives us his thoughts on who the main dangers might be.

Cast No Shadow struggled to find his form through last autumn and winter after winning in June but there are some reasons to be optimistic about a potential return to form. Firstly, from a handicapping perspective that poor run of form has left him well-treated while secondly, that victory came following a bit of a break so being fresh could be a good time to catch him. Having gained both career wins over this course and distance, he’s at the right place to find his best so it will be interesting to see how he runs. Tactically, I’d expect Cast No Shadow to be making the running or close to the pace and he just needs more end product in terms of finishing effort.

A good pace would suit Opal Storm who enjoys a good gallop at a stiff finishing track, but Spirit Of Applause looks the one to beat. Well-handicapped on his best, he took advantage of a falling mark at Southwell in September but hasn’t been seen to best advantage in a couple of starts since. He looked in good form at Southwell last time and should go well. Invincible Crown is also in good form and though his best has been at Wolverhampton, he looks the type who should be suited by this track which he’s trying for the first time.

Trainer and Jockey Statistics

Hugo Palmer
has been travelling the globe with his stable stars recently with Seagulls Eleven featuring in Australia and Ardisia running at the Breeders' Cup, but unfortunately neither were able to finish in the places. From his other 17 runners over the past couple of weeks, he's had one winner and five others finish in either secondor third place.

Jason Hart was in the winners' enclosure at Newcastle just yesterday as he scored on board Charlie Johnston's Parisian Scholar who won the 14:10 Nursery Handicap. That success added to his double at Musselburgh which he landed on Wednesday, so it's fair to say Jason is very much a jockey in form at the moment.
