Raceday LIVE Preview

Cave Article arrives at Market Rasen this afternoon after landing the third win of his career last time out in comfortable fashion. Having travelled powerfully for the duration of the race, Jack Tudor, who rides him again today, made his move three flights from home and Cave Article surged to the front of the field after the final fence to record his second victory in three races.

The handicapper only put Cave Article up four pounds in the weights for his emphatic victory, to a mark of 90, which is the highest rating that he's been handed in the duration of his career, and Christian Williams believes that with the form he's showing both at home and on the racecourse that he should be able to continue to progress throughout his next few runs.

Today's field at Market Rasen is a small one, with only six rivals lining up against our six-year-old, which should play into his hands given his form in races with fewer than ten runners. All of his last seven contests, which have had nine runners or less, have resulted in a top three finish for Cave Article, with all three of his victories coming during that period.

Of his rivals today, five are rated higher, with Reforme being the top weight, and the only horse rated 100, and the only runner that's tasted success over the course and distance is Ribeye. Top Of The Bay could be one to watch having won two of his last four races, with the most recent of those coming last time out at Market Rasen, and he comes in off a mark of 97, which is also the highest rating he's carried into a race. St Patrick's Bridge and La Quarite are the two maidens in the field, although the former has won two point-to-point races in his career and is making his chasing debut this afternoon.

Cave Article
has built up a pretty solid record since switching his attention to chasing and picked up a their win over the larger obstacles at Southwell last time, beating one or two in-form rivals. That effort was a career-best from Cave Article who should go well again off a 4lbs higher handicap mark today. Arguably at his best when getting a decent enough gallop ahead of him, the slight concern for him today may be the potential for a tactical race around a sharp track, but he has been ridden slightly handier in the past and he has form on sharp tracks so in the main everything looks in place for another good run.

Likely front runner La Quarite, the mount of Champion Jockey Sean Bowen looks one of the main dangers but he’s unproven over the trip and hasn’t looked a natural over fences so a bigger threat may be last time out course winner Top Of The Bay. He hasn’t yet fully proven his stamina for this far but is bred to stay and ran on well when landing that race here over shorter last time. Slievgar could also be a player but he isn’t a stout finisher so I suspect this may come down to a battle between Cave Article and Top Of The Bay.

Trainer and Jockey Statistics

Both Christian Williams and Jack Tudor will be hoping they can return to the winners' enclosure this afternoon with neither having a winner in the past couple of weeks.

So far in Christian's career as a trainer he's had just the one winner at Market Rasen from 26 runners, with Jack riding two winners from 24 rides at the Lincolnshire track.
