Raceday LIVE Preview
We head to Southwell today for the first leg of our Monday double header, as Cave Article returns to the scene of his last win for the Coral Racing Club. Trainer Christian Williams has had to be patient with Cave Article so far this year, as it's just taken a bit more time to get him back to peak fitness following an extended break after his final run of 2025. He's also been mindful of the weather and conditions over the past few months as he still believes we will see the best of our seven-year-old on better ground which is something he is much more likely to get over the coming weeks and months.
Cave Article has won three times for the club so far, and as already mentioned his most recent success came over today's course and distance. Talented young jockey, Jack Tudor, was in the saddle that day and he'll be taking the reins again this afternoon. He gave Cave Article a perfectly timed ride that day having been held up just on the coattails of the leaders for the majority of the race before taking it up in the home straight, where he bounded clear after taking the last, winning in the end by over four lengths.
WATCH: Cave Article puts in an excellent performance to win over course and distance last June
Having returned from an extended break of 231 days prior to his last run at Taunton, Cave Article wasn't able to put his best foot forward in his first start of the year, finishing a well-beaten 14 lengths behind the winner. Although the defeat may look disappointing on paper, he wasn't completely discredited given he was well in touch with the leaders approaching the second last fence and just seem to tire in the closing stages which was to be expected.
Cave Article lines up in a field of seven today, and carries the number four on his cloth, meaning that he's right in the middle of the handicaps for the race, carrying a stone less than the top weighted Queens Wish, who happens to be the only other course and distance winner in the field, with that victory coming last November in just her second start over fences. Huckleberry Sting is another runner who has found success over the stayers' trip of three miles, and did so in good style at Bangor last time out, going clear to win by five lengths, which was a noted improvement in form. Delgany Deadline is another runner of interest in today's contest for the Skelton team, having finished in the top three in five of his last seven races, including a victory over 2m6½f at Leicester three starts ago.
The ground is set to be good at Southwell this afternoon, matching the conditions in which Cave Article won here last time out, so everything should suit our seven-year-old perfectly in today's chase contest.
Christian Williams gives us the latest on Cave Article ahead of today's race at Southwell
"Cave Article is in great form at home. We've been a bit quieter with him this year so it might just take him a run or two to get to peak fitness.
He's a little bit round and big, but he's looking strong and seems to be really happy in himself. Hopefully he'll take a step forward with each run this year and then be able to get back to winning ways."

Racing TV Analyst, Chris Dixon, gives an exclusive preview on this afternoon's race at Southwell and tells us how he thinks it'll likely play out
Cave Article ran like a horse who would be better for the run when returning from nearly 8 months off at Taunton 32 days ago and with that outing behind him, he could be ready to get competitive this afternoon. Now 3lbs lower than when successful over this course and distance in June last year, he’s undoubtedly well-treated now and ground conditions will suit. The race looks unlikely to be run at a strong tempo, so perhaps a slightly handier position through the race could be an advantage, while it’s worth remembering his last two wins have been in headgear which he doesn’t wear today.
In terms of opposition, Huckleberry Sting stands out as the one to beat after his cosy win at Bangor last time which coincided with a step up to this trip, while Tom Desjy is unexposed and could progress. Delgany Deadline was below form last time and needs to bounce back but could be well positioned and previous form gives him a chance.
Trainer and Jockey Statistics
Christian Willliams hasn't had any luck in the past couple of weeks with just one runner from 11 managing to finish in the top three. That being said, the Welsh trainer does have a superb record at Southwell having recorded 13 winners from just 61 runners over the last five years.
Jack Tudor has been in similarly quiet form of late with just the one winner from his last 18 rides. Jack has four rides at Southwell today, with two of them being for Christian, both of which appear to have the strongest claims with the other two being double-figure odds.
