Raceday LIVE Preview

It's been just under a month since we last saw Cave Article in action when finishing 3rd at a testing Warwick track off his highest mark yet of 87, following the success he gained at Hereford in April. As a young and still inexperienced chaser having had just the six starts over the bigger obstacles, Warwick is not an easy place to visit as the fences come thick and fast in places, and if you get caught out at any of them, it can be hard to regain your rhythm.

On the day, Cave Article travelled supremely well as he often does, looking most the way round like he had plenty in the tank, but it's probably fair to say that he could've been more fluent over a handful of the fences he faced, and when it came down to it, he couldn't find enough in the closing stages to trouble the front two. However, it will no doubt have still been a great learning experience for him, especially as he now heads to Southwell which can also be a testing course for jumpers.

As a result of his Warwick effort, Cave Article has been dropped one pound down to a mark of 86, which has him as the fourth highest rated runner in the field. There are only two six-year-olds in the contest, with one being Cave Article and the other Karavomylos for the Mickey Bowen team. Eightytwo Team is the only previous course and distance winner in the field who won very comfortable last time out, meanwhile Sir Rock is another who also comes here chasing back-to-back wins for trainer Toby Lawes.

Jack Tudor returns to the saddle onboard Cave Article this afternoon for the first time since riding in a maiden hurdle back in March 2024, and that could be a real boost to his chances today. Despite still only being 23 year-old, Jack has ridden over 700 times – yes seven hundred – for Christian, and he's been called upon for some of the Welsh trainers biggest wins to date, including Potter's Corner in the 2019 Coral Welsh Grand National and Kitty's Light in the 2023 Coral Scottish Grand National.

Chris Dixon, Racing TV analyst, previews today's 14:40 at Southwell and gives his verdict on the race

Cave Article was unable to get back to winning ways last time but did run with credit at Warwick on that latest outing 30 days ago and should run well again in an open looking race. The track, trip and ground conditions all look suitable and he remains on a feasible mark, while the race should be run to suit as well with a couple of possible front runners in the field likely to ensure at least an even pace.

One of those front runners, Sir Rock, who won when last seen at Fontwell a month ago looks the one to beat with that winning form boosted by the third horse scoring next time. A slight shorter trip and easier track won’t bother him and may well suit better so a good run is expected. Eightytwo Team is another who will be up with the early pace and he jumped very well when winning at Warwick last time, but that was a very weak race and more will be required here off a 4lbs higher mark in a deeper race. Getthepot lacks consistency but is capable when on a going day and has had wind surgery since his last run so has a chance, while better was clearly expected of Karlvomylos when returning from an absence as a beaten favourite last time so he may do better as he switches to fences off a reduced mark.

In summary, Cave Article probably has Sir Rock to beat, but the race looks to provide him with an ideal test and he should at least go close in a race the trainer and jockey have teamed up to win in the past two seasons

Trainer and Jockey Statistics

Christian Williams has had one winner from his last 12 runners which came just five days ago at Newton Abbot, but the Welsh trainer has a good record at Southwell recording a 14% win-rate from the 91 runners he's sent there in his career so far as a trainer.

Jack Tudor has an even better win-rate from the saddle around Southwell (16%) and the young jockey heads here for just two rides, both for Christian, with the other being Always Busy in the 17:20.
