Raceday LIVE Preview
It's a big day for the club's five-year-old son of Churchill as Conservative looks to put a disappointing handicap debut over hurdles behind him in which he was pulled up.
Following three runs in novice company, Conservative was given an opening handicap mark of 91, which trainer Joe Tizzard believed at the time was very fair. He'd finished sixth, fifth and fourth in those opening efforts over hurdles and had shown some staying potential after coming off the bridle early before sticking to his task well and keeping on in the final stages.
Those performances led Joe to believe that a step up in trip could help see some improvement from Conservative, but unfortunately it wasn't to be on his handicap debut almost a month ago today.
Today's jockey, Brendan Powell, allowed Conservative to go out in front and for the majority of the contest the pair travelled really well. What was obvious however was that Conservative wasn't able to get into a good rhythm whilst jumping, and on more than one occasion he clipped the top of the hurdle, which no doubt impacted his momentum. As the pair jumped the third from home, Conservative began to drop away and as mentioned, was eventually pulled up.
Fortunately Conservative came out of the race at Plumpton in good health and has since been in great form at home, so hopefully he can show his true colours this afternoon.

Today Conservative drops back in distance from 2m4f to 2m, which means we're likely see a few opponents who will look to set the pace. This should allow Brendan to get Conservative in a nice position in midfield where he can preserve some of his energy, and then hopefully if he's in a good position towards the end of the race, he'll be able to put it to good use and make a challenge for the places.
Conservative will face 14 rivals, and the current going is Good, Good to Soft in places, and that should suit our gelding much more than the deep ground he had to endure at Plumpton last time out.
"He's a bit of an enigma and a puzzle, but one I'm looking forward to cracking!"
This is what Joe told us after Conservative's first run over hurdles back in July, and it's because Joe has always been so pleased with his work at home in his fitness training and whilst schooling, but when it comes to main day on the racecourse, he for whatever reason just hasn't shown his true colours yet.
Hopefully today can be the day that he puts it altogether, in what is a very exciting week for the club as we fast approach our 100-runner milestone since launching back in November 2022.
Raceday message from Joe Tizzard
"Conservative has been absolutely great at home since his last run, he’s always taken his work really well, which makes it even more frustrating that he’s yet to show that form on the track. His first run in a handicap obviously didn’t go to plan, nothing came to light after the race to suggest there was anything wrong physically with the horse, so we’re ready to go again.
We have dropped him back in trip to 2 miles, I thought 2 ½ miles would suit him, and he may have been beaten too far out last time to say he definitely didn’t stay, but we have to try something different with him, and this minimum distance might just help.
It’s ended up as a maximum field of 15, which at first glance isn’t ideal, but then again, it means Brendan [Powell] won’t have to make the running, but instead there should be plenty of pace for him to follow. We rode him positively last time, so again, this is just about doing things differently in the hope of a different outcome.
He’s always shown enough at home to make us believe he could win a race over hurdles, and while it’s too soon to say he won’t, we do need to see him show a bit more in this run. Horses can be physically sound but just lose it in the head, hopefully that’s not where we are with this fellow."
Trainer and Jockey Statistics
Joe Tizzard has started to hit some form in the past couple of weeks sending out three winners from 16 runners, including Bourbali yesterday at Kempton. Joe has only sent four runners to Plumpton so far this season but has an eye-catching 50% strike-rate.
Brendan Powell will be in high spirits today as he comes to Plumpton off the back of a winner with the aforementioned Bourbali. Brendan has ridden over 250 times at Plumpton, so we're hopeful he'll be able to put that experience to good use with Conservative this afternoon.

Conservative
A return to 2m looks a positive for Conservative who always seemed likely to struggle when upped in trip last time. The ground was also a bit slower than is probably optimum for him over hurdles that day and a slightly sounder surface looks a plus. The form of the stable has been good since the start of September so that’s also a positive.
However, Conservative will still need to take a big step forward from even the pick of his hurdles form if he’s to get competitive in a handicap and for the time being he’ll need to show more if there’s to be realistic confidence behind him.
Opposition
Saligo Bay is a previous winner around here and takes a drop in class over hurdles so looks on of the key players for a yard that do well at the track while Embolden is also one to keep an eye on. He’s got a decent record at this track and looked like he was in need of the run when returning from a break at Uttoxeter 15 days ago. Having dropped in the weights since some places efforts in handicaps last season, he’s potentially well-handicapped now and the return to this track in first time blinkers looks like a sign of intent and a return to form could be on the cards.
