Raceday LIVE Preview

Diamond Days is set to head back out on the racecourse for the first time in eight months at Fontwell this afternoon, after enjoying an extended summer break following his promising first season as a racehorse.

We caught up with Joe Tizzard at our recent stable visit at Venn Farm, where he told us how well he believed that Diamond Days had summered, having put on a good amount of weight. He's since come back into the yard and showed great levels of exuberance in his work, which should hopefully translate to some improvement on the track over the course of the season.

The most potential Diamond Days showed on the track last season was on his penultimate run of the season, where he finished second in heavy going at Lingfield, in a performance that wasn't without it's flaws. Diamond Days still showed a little inexperience in his jumping on that day, getting low into a couple of the hurdles on the way round, but he did however show plenty of heart and running ability in less than ideal ground. He wasn't able to follow that up next time out at Hereford, where he struggled with the electric pace on completely the opposite ground that he had run on previously.

That should mean that the 'Good To Soft' ground that's being described at Fontwell this afternoon should be sat somewhere perfectly in the middle of those two experiences, although it isn't a going description that he's faced in his six run career so far.

Diamond Days is set to come up against some relatively experienced competition this afternoon, despite it being a hurdle race. Castle Quarter, Whatmakes Honey B and Tigers Moon all line up having won last time out, the latter having scored just last week over two miles at Uttoxeter. Interestingly, two of the least experienced runners in the field carry the top weights in the race. Morning Mayhem and Under The Sun both race off of a mark of 95 despite their lack of prior runs over hurdles, although Under The Sun did show some promise on the flat for Hugo Palmer before moving to Sussex with Gary and Josh Moore.

Trainer Joe Tizzard provides a raceday update on Diamond Days ahead of today's reappearance

"We’ve been waiting to run Diamond Days for a few weeks now. We’ve done plenty of work with him at home but we’ve been desperate for rain and some ease in the going and now that’s arrived we can get him started. It’s a long season so I’m not concerned we’ve not been able to run before now, he’s fit and well but like most of mine I’m sure he’ll improve for the run.

We gave him a few entries this week, we bypassed Chepstow on Wednesday as it looked a hotter contest and then it came down to this race at Fontwell or Ffos Las on Sunday. We went for Fontwell, which I’m hoping is the right choice. I was surprised there weren’t more declared on Wednesday morning, while we were also able to book Ben Jones to ride, with Brendan [Powell] at Exeter, which was a plus and a factor in us running here.

As I say, we’ve done plenty with him at home and we’ve also schooled him over fences as well as hurdles, which hopefully sharpens up his jumping. I’m not concerned that on his last run at the track he hung badly and nearly ran out with Brendan. We never really got to the bottom of why he did that and he’s not shown anything similar since, at home or on the track. Ben's instructions will be to give him some cover, just to get him settled in the first four or five.

I’m happy with how fit he is for his comeback, I do think he’s strengthened up over the summer and this looks a good opportunity to start the new season with a big performance. I’m not saying he’ll win, but I do think he’s capable of running really well."

Racing TV Analyst, Chris Dixon, breaks down this afternoon's contest at Fontwell and tells us how he thinks it might play out

Diamond Days' second place finish at Lingfield on his handicap debut in January shows he can be competitive off his mark, but he will need to jump much better than he did on that occasion and on his subsequent run at Hereford when he really struggled to find any fluency over the obstacles.

The one to beat looks sure to be Tigers Moon who has improved since switching to handicaps and won with a bundle to spare at Uttoxeter a week ago. Rapid Mission ran his best race yet over hurdles at Chepstow last time and moves to handicaps for the first time off what could be an attractive opening mark based on his flat form.

Trainer and Jockey Statistics

Joe Tizzard
has been in fair form recently with three winners that include two Class 2 winners on Saturday, as well as Fight My Fire who scored convincingly over the same course and distance that Diamond Days is set to run at later. He's saddled 15 total winners at Fontwell since taking over the license from his father, Colin Tizzard, of which two have come so far this season.

Ben Jones has been on fire in the last fortnight and has posted eight winners from 37 rides in that time period, including doubles at Ascot and Carlisle last weekend. His record at Fontwell is solid too, with 11 career winners from 81 rides at the track, including two this season. Today's ride will mark the first time that Ben Jones has ridden for Joe Tizzard and the pair will be hoping that it'll be a debut to remember with Diamond Days.
