Raceday LIVE Preview

Ribbon Is A Dancer is set to make the trip to Newcastle for the first time in his fledgling career, and with it being his third run under rules, will receive his opening handicap following today's contest.

He kicked off his career in a Class 5 Maiden at Southwell last month, coming home in 10th of 11 runners, with young apprentice Liam Wright in the saddle. It wasn't the easiest of runs for our two-year-old, as he was slow to get out of the stalls and spent the entirety of the race in the rear. He showed signs of being green too, which isn't uncommon for young horses on their first racecourse start, and Liam Wright wasn't able to make up the ground lost at the start of the race, with the horse pulling quite hard throughout.

Although the result in itself doesn't suggest it, Ribbon Is A Dancer's second run was far better than his first. He came home last of the 11 runners, but looked far less green in his performance, and broke from the stalls considerably better than he did first time out. He remained quite keen at Kempton, as he was at Southwell, but looked to be more comfortable in his surroundings than he did on debut.

Ribbon Is A Dancer following his last race at Kempton

Hopefully he continues to improve in this afternoon's race, in a slightly smaller field than he's run in before, at a track that Hugo Palmer has found success at with another Coral Racing Club horse, Cast No Shadow. The draw of stall 6 is slightly more favourable that his previous two starts, having run from the widest of all, stall 11 on debut and then in 9 last time out. Being surrounded by other horses when breaking from the stalls, rather than having open space to one side, should help him to settle and encourage him to get away quicker than he has prior to today.

Hugo Palmer has made the decision to keep Ribbon Is A Dancer over the 7f trip, having showed improvement for the slight step up last time out. Also, the ground won't be anything new for Ribbon Is A Dancer this afternoon, as he ran on the tapeta at Southwell on his debut and the going is set to be Standard, as it was that day too.

Raceday update from trainer Hugo Palmer

"Ribbon Is A Dancer came out of his Kempton run well, so we’ve been able to get him out again for his third run, after which he will get his official handicap mark.

It was an improved run last time, there was no repeat of the antics we saw from him on debut, and it’s fair to expect him to learn more again here. Ali Rawlinson is an experienced rider who can reach him more, and while we’re deservedly among the outsiders here, it’s another step on the ladder for him.

After this race we can decide if we want to have him gelded, and then when he’s running in handicaps, that’s when we’ll see what he has to offer.

Ribbon Is A Dancer hasn’t shown a great deal in two starts so far and would need to find a huge chunk of improvement to get competitive even though this is unlikely to be a strong race. He’s yet to really get himself into a race in his two outings so far and has beaten just one rival so far and the hope has to be that he finds some progress once switching to handicaps after this.

Orangesandlemons will be the horse to beat after his encouraging debut second behind an odds-on favourite with experience over this course and distance four weeks ago. He should improve with that run behind him though might not actually need to progress in order to go one better. Magic Topissima was third here when last seen in June and that form was boosted by the subsequent win of the runner-up though over all it doesn’t look a strong piece of form and she had been beaten in selling company on her debut. As such I expect Hush Puppy to be a bigger threat after finishing a reasonably encouraging fifth at Lingfield on debut earlier in the month and there should be some improvement to come.

Trainer and Jockey Statistics

Hugo Palmer has been in relatively quiet form recently, which is to be expected given that the turf season is over and there being a limited number of spaces in the all-weather contests taking place. He's landed one winner in the last two weeks, from 14 runners, and that came at Chelmsford 9 days ago. He has an 18% strike-rate on Newcastle's all-weather track, with 47 career winners at the course, of which 7 have been this year (two of which were Cast No Shadow).

Alistair Rawlinson has picked up two winners from his 12 runners in the last fortnight, the last of which came exactly a week ago at Southwell. Rawlinson has won 15 times at Newcastle in his career, with a third of those victories arriving this year. Hugo Palmer isn't a trainer he's ridden frequently for however, only picking up 6 rides for the Cheshire based yard in his career, with all of those coming this season. He spends most of his time riding for Michael Appleby, for whom he's ridden 28 winners for this year.
