Tidal Force will make his long awaited handicap debut for the Coral Racing Club this afternoon, when he runs in the Class 6 Nursey Handicap over 7f at Leicester (14:07).

Our Hugo Palmer-trained gelding lines up in the seven-furlong Class 6 Nursery Handicap following three outings in novice company at Haydock, Chester and Wolverhampton.

Having gained valuable experience from those first three starts, Tidal Force now takes his first step into handicap company off an opening mark of 50, with Sean Dylan Bowen taking the ride. He'll carry just 8st 8lb this afternoon and breaks from stall eight.

There's also an interesting change to his tack, with Hugo opting to fit blinkers for the first time. Designed to limit a horse's peripheral vision, blinkers can help encourage greater concentration and keep their attention on the job in hand. Every horse responds differently to headgear but it will be interesting to see whether the change helps Tidal Force sharpen up and become more competitive.

His most recent outing came over seven furlongs at Wolverhampton, where he finished eighth of eleven. Although he's yet to trouble the judge, those early runs have provided valuable experience and today's move into nursery company offers him the opportunity to compete against horses assessed on similar handicap terms.

The heavy ground adds another dimension to the challenge, particularly for a young horse still learning his trade, but there's reason to be optimistic. Tidal Force has attracted some positive attention in the racing press, with Oddschecker suggesting his opening handicap mark could underestimate his ability and including him among their predicted first three.

There's some interesting opposition among his eleven rivals, headed by Blanquita, who looks a leading contender for Dylan Cunha following an excellent second at Haydock earlier this month. Crucially, that performance came over seven furlongs on heavy ground, so she has already demonstrated her ability to handle today's testing conditions. Ground Force is another to keep an eye on for James Owen after finishing a close second on his handicap debut at Yarmouth, while Blue Sign arrives following a promising runner-up effort over six furlongs here at Leicester. Amantha also brings winning experience to the field, having already scored twice over seven furlongs this season.

It's a competitive nursery with several runners bringing encouraging recent form to the table but we're looking forwards to seeing what Tidal Force can produce now that he's entering handicap company.

With a light weight on his back, first-time blinkers and the benefit of three runs behind him, hopefully our boy can put his experience to good use and show us a little more of what he's capable of.

Hugo Palmer has recorded 51 winners from 501 runners on the Flat this season, operating at a 10% strike rate. His two-year-old turf runners have produced 17 victories from 152 starts (11% strike rate) and he'll be hoping Tidal Force can add to that tally at Leicester this afternoon. 

Sean Dylan Bowen has recorded 31 winners from 395 rides on the Flat this season, operating at an 8% strike rate. He has partnered one winner from 29 rides on two-year-olds on turf and will be hoping to improve that record aboard Tidal Force this afternoon.
