Aspire To Glory set for a quick turn around following his impressive run at Ripon

Aspire To Glory ran a great race yesterday at Ripon in the Class 6 Handicap (17:10) over a mile on just his second start of the new flat turf season where he finished in 2nd place.

Darragh Keenan, who has been riding Aspire To Glory at home regularly, was in the saddle and he held our gelding up at the back of the field for much of the early going.

They looked to go be going a good speed up front through the first couple of furlongs, which will have probably helped Aspire To Glory as he can often be a little keen, and that certainly isn't helped if there is no early pace.

As the leading pack passed the three furlong marker, the race started to heat up, but Darragh remained calm and composed on Aspire To Glory as he angled him out wide down the middle of the track in order to get a clear run. One by one, the pair picked off race rivals as they continued to make good progress down the home straight, and as they approached the final furlong, it looked as though they were going to take up the running and go on to victory.

However, just as Aspire To Glory came within a length of the eventual winner (Crown's Lady), he began to hang right a little, and couldn't quite close the gap on the gallant front runner.

Post-race review from Alice Haynes

"Aspire To Glory has come out of his Ripon well and ran a sound race to go close. The winner made all which isn’t a surprise at that track, but Aspire got on well with Darragh and looked like the winner on a couple of different occasions during the race.

He is a bit of a thinker who doesn’t put his absolute maximum into going forwards, and Darragh did very well to keep him as straight as he did and get him running on into second.

I think there’s every chance we’ll back him up in six days at Leicester as he does just hold that bit back for himself and as such won’t have had as hard a race as it could perhaps look. He ran well in any case, and is on a winning mark when things drop right."
