Raceday LIVE Preview

Aspire To Glory is set to have his seventh start of the summer this evening following six appearances on the turf since he made his return at Leicester in May. The closest he's come to winning in those six efforts was at Ripon in June when he finished second, but unfortunately he's not quite been unable to replicate that kind of performance since apart from when finishing third at Chepstow a couple of starts later.

Ground conditions has been the main reason as to why he's struggled to put his best foot forward on a few occasions, and that was the case most recently at Ayr where he was the well backed favourite. Although there was some rain around, the ground was still a bit too quick for him, and with a hood on, he wasn't at his sharpest as they left the stalls, which meant he was trailing the field early on under Hollie Doyle and just had too much to do.

Today, Alice Haynes has decided to remove the hood and hopes the return to an all-weather surface can help him bounce back to the form he showed at the beginning of the year when winning back-to-back races at Kempton and Lingfield.

Both of those wins on the all-weather were over seven furlongs, and Aspire To Glory drops back to that trip today following consecutive runs over a mile. His last win was off a mark of 52, but as a result of his recent performances on turf, he's now dropped to a mark of 49, so if he can put it all together today, there's certainly reason to believe he's well handicapped to go close.

Christian Howarth is booked to ride again today, which will be his third time riding Aspire To Glory in competitive action, and as he's an apprentice jockey, he's able to claim three pounds which will certainly come in handy.

Trainer and Jockey Statistics

Alice Haynes has only been in the winners enclosure twice over the past two weeks, but she's been consistently knocking on the door with a flurry of her runners finishing either second or third, including two yesterday at Catterick and Yarmouth. In her career so far, Alice has sent 179 runners to Wolverhampton, the most of any track, and she has a respectable 13% strike-rate there with 24 wins.

Christian Howarth has had seven rides in the past two weeks, including one winner at Newmarket and one placed effort at Yarmouth. Despite still being in the early stages of his career, Christian has vast experience on the all-weather, in particular at Wolverhampton after having 125 rides there so far in his career. Those efforts have yielded 11 victories, with a further 24 placed efforts.

Racing Post | Spotlight Verdict

Lumenbourg scored on turf in a first-time visor on his latest start. Aspire To Glory also makes the shortlist having dropped 3lb below his last winning mark, but the vote goes to LIEGE whose two best efforts have come over C&D, including when a close third of ten last month. (David Bellingham)

Today's Opposition

  • Lumenbourg arrives here off the back of his first victory for the Julie Camacho team, but he'll have to prove he can be as effective on the all-weather whilst shouldering a 3lb rise in the weights.

  • Liege was beaten by a length and a half over C&D last time out and has been dropped 1lb since. That was his first attempt over seven furlongs for new trainer Simon Hodgson so if he can back that up he's likely to go close.

  • Zachary makes his first trip to Wolverhampton following two satisfactory efforts over seven furlongs on the turf at Ayr. He's won twice over shorter (5f/6f), but both have come at Chelmsford. The jockey booking of Rossa Ryan is a positive.
