Raceday LIVE Preview

Aspire To Glory heads back to Wolverhampton this evening, as he looks to get his head in front for the third time in his career, and for the first time over the extended mile trip.

The Club's four-year-old son of Cotai Glory began 2025 over seven furlongs, where he's spent the majority of his career to date, finishing a very good looking second at Southwell, a performance for which he was raised 4lbs by the handicapper for. Kieran O'Neill rode him that day, and incidentally he's onboard again tonight, and after that race he said that our four-year-old would likely benefit from a step up in trip to a mile.

Trainer Alice Haynes took that into account and turned him around quickly for a step up in trip to a mile at Newcastle just eight days later. Under the guidance of Rowan Scott, he wasn't able to make an impression however, eventually finishing seventh of the 11 runners at Gosforth Park. Although that doesn't tell the full story in this case, as Aspire To Glory was giving weight to all bar three of his ten opponents in the race, due to it being a Classified Stakes contest, where he was technically running off of a mark of 43, as his rise in the weights hadn't been considered at the point of entry.

With that in mind, Alice entered Aspire To Glory for another race, over the same course and distance that he runs at this evening. He put in a better showing on that day earlier in February, finishing just over three lengths down in 4th position, picking up some prize money for his lucky Owners for the Day in the process.

Interestingly, Alice Haynes has chosen to ditch the various different mixtures of headgear that had been applied to Aspire To Glory in previous runs, that had culminated in a mega combination of a hood, eye hood, a tongue-tie and blinkers in his last run of 2024. Today, Aspire To Glory will only don the tongue-tie, which he has worn by itself on four previous occasions, including a promising fourth place finish over seven furlongs here at Wolverhampton in August of last Summer.

Aspire To Glory has been drawn in stall seven this evening, which falls right in the centre of the 12 strong field, so he'll need to break away in good style to ensure he gets an advantageous position for the first bend, which comes up quickly from the 1m½f starting point.

The field is a very experienced one, and Aspire To Glory is one of only three four-year-olds lining up in the race, with the top weight Just Typical being one of those. Of the 11 other horses he's set to line up against, six of them have been successful over course and distance in the past, whilst a further two runners have won over the mile trip at different venues previously.

Raceday update from Alice Haynes

"Aspire To Glory has been in good form at home and is ready to go again this evening. We will try to get him travelling behind the leaders rather than racing as close to the pace as he has done previously. He was a touch too keen last time over course and distance, and also getting him to do something a bit different will hopefully keep him interested.

It is a relatively competitive handicap for the grade, though those towards the top of the weights, Just Typical, Plumette and Charlatan, look the most dangerous, but Aspire To Glory is capable of getting involved if things fall into place.

Chris Dixon, Racing TV Analyst, gives us his thoughts on Aspire To Glory and his competition in this evening's contest at Wolverhampton

Aspire To Glory couldn’t quite produce his best form at Wolverhampton earlier in the month but wasn’t disgraced in 4th spot behind a couple of decent operators at Classified level. The runner-up Dash Power has since run well to hit the frame back in a handicap to give the form a solid enough look and given sectional times show Aspire To Glory and the third horse ultimately contested a slightly stronger pacer than ideal, his effort can be marked up slightly. With that being the case it’s fair to assume Aspire To Glory is still in the kind of form that saw him win a few starts ago, and though the return to handicap company means this race is a shade more competitive, he should be up to running well again. A lower draw than stall 7 would’ve been ideal but many of the early pace horses are sat on his outside so it he can get a slot in behind the leaders then he should be able to get in without being too wide and be well-enough positioned to run his race.

The gallop does likely to be quite a strong one which will suit Charlatan who was only just beaten here last time. David Simcock’s filly is able to race off the same mark here and is well-in at the weights so should have a big chance and looks the one to beat. Pessoa also wants a good pace to aim at and looks a likely contender at a track he’s got plenty of winning form having not had the rub of the green on a few occasions recently. He’s well-handicapped and is up to going close if getting some luck with his run through.

Trainer and Jockey Statistics

Alice Haynes hasn't had many runners recently, but she has scored two wins in the last week from just four runners, both with Dougie Costello onboard. She's also had one winner at Wolverhampton so far this year, from 11 runners, taking her total tally at the track to 29 wins from 231 runners. Aspire To Glory is also one of her two runners that have finished second at Dunstall Park this year, and the Newmarket based team will be hoping he can go one better tonight.

Kieran O'Neill has amassed 100 winners at Wolverhampton to date in his career, and looks to add to that tally tonight with his first of the year. He's also had 101 winners trained by Alice Haynes in total, with one of those arriving in 2025. Today will also be the eighth time that Kieran has ridden Aspire To Glory, as well as the fourth time in his last five runs that the two have combined, as the pair look for their first win together.
