Raceday LIVE Preview
Cave Article kicks the new National Hunt season off this evening at Warwick, looking to start this year the way he ended the last one. Talented young conditional Charlie Maggs is booked to ride again, having timed his run on Cave Article perfectly last time out, scoring by an eventual going away 2¼ lengths at Hereford, however he won't be able to make use of his five pound claim this time out, as the race is specifically for Conditional Jockeys.

Remarkably, Cave Article hasn't finished outside of the first three home in his last five runs, including two victories which came at Sedgefield and Hereford. In that time his official rating has skyrocketed from 76 to 87, with his latest victory earning him a five pound rise in the handicaps.

Cave Article will line up in a small field of six tonight, and Moonlight Artist, trained by fellow Coral Racing Club Trainer, Joe Tizzard, is the only course and distance winner in the field, with that victory coming last time out too. Anytrixwilldo, who is also trained by another pair of Coral Racing Club Trainers, Jonjo & AJ O'Neill, also arrives off the back of a win, which came at Taunton over three and a half miles last month. Maidens, Grand Sabre and Chateau Du Lys, also line up tonight looking for their first victories, meanwhile Grillon De Monty rounds off the field looking for his first win since April 2023.
The ground is set to be "Good" at Warwick this evening, which should play into Cave Article's hand as his last two runs have been on the same going, including his win at Hereford last time out.
Raceday message from trainer Christian Williams
"I am looking forward to running Cave Article at Warwick this evening. It is a conditional handicap chase, so we kept Charlie Maggs on board. He rode him so well to victory at Hereford last month. Unfortunately, he won’t be able to claim his 5lb this time.
This will be a tougher assignment for him, but he remains in great form at home, so I am optimistic of another big run. It’s a small competitive field, but one that is winnable if he puts his best foot forward.
The track should suit him, as will the ground. There are some small fields at Warwick for this card as it will be fast ground. Cave Article won’t mind that. Hopefully, he can record his third win for us and start the new season in the best possible way."
Chris Dixon, Racing TV analyst, previews Cave Article's race at Warwick this evening
Cave Article bounced back to winning form in good style at Hereford last time, to some extent over coming the run of the race to beat his stablemate Side Stepper. A switch to a more patient ride and the application of cheek pieces seemed the catalyst for a bit of improvement from Cave Article that day and with Side Stepper having come out to go one better since, that form has been nicely boosted since. A 5lbs rise seems fair enough and though Cave Article doesn’t have the benefit of Charlie Maggs’ 5lbs claim in this Conditional Jockeys race, he still looks well handicapped and looks to have been found a good opportunity to follow up.
Recent winners Anytrixwilldo and Moonlight Artist had both dropped in the weights prior to those recent wins and remain with handicapping potential at this level, but Cave Article is still going the right way and I think he has a good chance of having the measure of his rivals here.
Trainer and Jockey Statistics
Christian Williams has had one winner in the last fortnight, Side Stepper, who Cave Article beat in his last race. The South Wales-based trainer has also had two third place finishers in the last week too, so his string are running well in this early part of the season. Warwick is a popular destination for Christian Williams runners, and he's sent 110 horses there in his career, returning with 13 winners, although he's yet to score at the course from three runs there this season.
Charlie Maggs was onboard Cave Article in his last contest, which they won together, and the young conditional jockey is now on 25 career wins, one of which was his only ever ride at Warwick. He also has one win from three rides for Christian Williams, which came on Cave Article last time, and the pair will be looking to continue their successful partnership this evening.
