Raceday LIVE Preview

Greek Symphony made an excellent start to her career at Goodwood earlier in the month, where she managed to finish a clear third in a valuable contest. Although her early exuberance, and lack of experience, caught up to her in the end where she began to fade, it was a pleasing performance and one that filled us with confidence as we look forward to the rest of the summer season with our new two-year-old. Both trainer, Oliver Cole, and jockey, Rob Hornby were very complimentary of Greek Symphony after the race with the former believing that a change in ground and a kinder draw could see her improve next time out.

WATCH: Oliver Cole reflects on Greek Symphony's debut at Goodwood
CRC
Oliver Cole was keen to get her back out again quickly, and identified today's race at Newbury very soon after her debut, with another banded race offering the perfect opportunity for Greek Symphony to put her best foot forward once more and hopefully go two places better than she did at Goodwood.

Today's race at Newbury should shape up similarly to the Goodwood contest, with it being restricted to the novice horses in the same bands, B, C and D, as her debut race. The original race has been divided, meaning Greek Symphony lines up against nine rivals this evening, all of whom are maidens too. Of the ten in the field, only Sequel Star is making her debut at Newbury, with every other runner having completed at least one racecourse start. Yahaira comes into today as the most experienced horse in the field, having managed her best finish to date last time out, a fourth place finish at Bath. Chilli is the only other rival of Greek Symphony this evening that has finished as high as fourth, doing so at Chepstow earlier in the month on her debut, the rest of the runners in the race have only managed to finish fifth or worse in their fledgling careers.

The going is set to be good to firm, which is no surprise given the current heatwave covering the entirety of the UK and Greek Symphony is drawn slightly more handily in stall seven this time, so she should have some cover as they break from the gates.

Racing TV Analyst, Chris Dixon, previews tonight's Newbury contest and tells us who he thinks will come out on top

Greek Symphony showed some ability at Goodwood first time out and looks up to winning races on that evidence. She’s the first horse to emerge from that race 11 days ago so the form hasn’t been tested at this point and the ground conditions were very testing on that day so this will be a different test but she did fare best of the newcomers when finishing third and should improve for the experience.

She will likely need to improve in order to win at the second attempt as Chilli probably ran to a higher level when fourth at Chepstow on debut and sets the standard on form. That race also came on slow ground, so she has similar questions to answer as Greek Symphony, though she is also open to improvement especially as this extra furlong looks a plus given how she ran first time out. The newcomer Sequel Star looks most interesting of the remainder as her pedigree suggests she has the potential to rate the best of these in time.

Trainer and Jockey Statistics

Oliver Cole has scored twice in the last fortnight, with one of those victories coming at Newbury 12 days ago, taking his record at the course to 2/15 since taking over the license at Whatcombe Stables. He's one from eight at the Berkshire course this year, as a result of that victory on the 11th, and will be looking to double his tally with Greek Symphony this evening.

Neil Callan has been in tremendously good form recently, landing four wins from 11 rides, including a double at Goodwood a 11 days ago. He scored again at Newmarket over the weekend, and also finished second and third in his other two rides on the dayNeil has only ridden twice for Oliver Cole, winning on one of those occasions, and has been victorious for the Whatcombe team on 18 other occasions.
