Raceday LIVE Preview

Katalyst heads back to Wales for the first time since her debut run just over a year ago, although today's destination is Ffos Las rather than Chepstow. She also runs over a distance four furlongs further, as she continues to transition towards staying contests as opposed to the sprint races she was taking part in during the early phases of her career.

Katalyst has shown some solid progress since beginning to step up in trip, with encouraging finishes coming in races over 1m½f (4th at Nottingham), 1m1f (2nd at Nottingham) and 1m2f (4th at Windsor), all of which have come so far this summer. Although there have been some blips in her form that have come between those runs, including a less than ideal performance at Nottingham last time out, there have been reasons for positivity going forward.

One of those reasons for positivity is the relationship that's been forming between talented young conditional, Ryan Kavanagh, and Katalyst. Benefitting from riding her regularly at home, Kavanagh has been able to use his experience of training Katalyst on the gallops to get the most out of her on the racecourse. It has been pretty clear that Katalyst can become uncomfortable from the prelims, all the way through to the race, so having someone familiar onboard should almost certainly help her temperament and make it far easier for her to perform to the level we know that she's able to.

Katalyst lines up against ten rivals this afternoon, two of whom arrive having won their last race. Lc Tiffen scored over today's distance of 1m2f at Haydock earlier this month with Molly Gunn retaining the ride after that performance and claiming a valuable five pounds off her back. The other last time out winner is Give Me Sun, who scored at Windsor when most recently seen, a race in which Katalyst finished fourth in, although our filly is three pounds better off in the handicaps this afternoon. Beryl's Girl is another interesting runner in today's field, having won over this distance three starts ago and is only off a mark three pounds higher than when she recorded that victory.

The ground at Ffos Las is set to be good, although there are showers forecast so the underfoot conditions could become more testing by the time Katalyst's race comes around at 16:20, in the fifth contest of the day. She's been drawn in stall seven, and we know that she enjoys taking up the running, so being drawn in the middle of the field could help her to bolt out of the gates to the front of the field, to avoid any traffic issues in the early going of the race.

William Muir & Chris Grassick bounced back to form yesterday with a double across the cards at Southwell and Lingfield, having not a winner in the fortnight prior to that. Their one runner at Ffos Las yesterday afternoon came home in second place too, backing up the good form they had showed on the day.

Ryan Kavanagh hasn't ridden a winner for almost a month, although he has hit the frame on a couple of occasions recently and he hasn't had a bad year so far overall either, with 31 winners to date in 2026. None of those winners have come in the 20 rides he's had at Ffos Las, however he has ridden three seconds and three thirds at the course, with all bar one of those second place finishes coming this year. Could today be the day he rides his first winner at the Welsh course?
