Raceday LIVE Preview
It's Monday night racing under the lights at Kempton and we're delighted to have our girl Katalyst back in action! Our three-year-old filly returns to the scene of her memorable first career victory with Lewis Edmunds reunited with her in the saddle and there's plenty for Coral Racing Club members to look forward to! Trained by Chris Grassick, Katalyst lines up in the 19:15 handicap over just shy of a mile and three furlongs. She carries 9st 6lb off an official rating of 59 and returns to Class 6 company following her latest outing in a stronger Class 4 handicap earlier this month.
It was on 9 September that Katalyst gave us a wonderful evening at Kempton, producing a gutsy performance to claim her first career success at odds of 22/1! Ridden by Lewis Edmunds, she travelled prominently before taking up the running over two furlongs from home. When Goldfinder came to challenge inside the final furlong, our filly refused to surrender her advantage, digging deep to hold on by half a length.
It was a performance full of courage and tenacity and one that gave us a real insight into her battling qualities. The step up to this distance appeared to suit her particularly well, with the training team also highlighting the benefit of a more patient ride. That victory came over precisely the same course and distance she'll tackle on Monday evening, so it's encouraging to see her returning to conditions under which she's already proved herself.
Her most recent appearance came at Kempton on 5 October when she finished seventh in Class 4 company. Monday represents a drop back into Class 6 and although she'll need to produce another competitive performance, there are certainly positives to take into the race.
The opposition
There are some interesting rivals to consider in Monday's handicap and Katalyst certainly won't have things all her own way. Heart Sign, trained by Tony Carroll and partnered by Rossa Ryan, arrives following a victory on his latest appearance. He carries the same weight as Katalyst and looks an interesting rival if he can build on that success. Fizzy Bear, representing George Baker with Callum Shepherd booked to ride, also warrants respect after finishing runner-up last time out. He has been knocking on the door recently and will be looking to go one better. Ataturk, trained by Hughie Morrison, is another worth keeping an eye on with recent placed form to his name, while the experienced Uzincso has previous winning form over Kempton's course and distance.
It's a competitive handicap with several runners capable of getting involved but Katalyst has already demonstrated that she possesses the stamina and willingness required to see out this trip.
Can Katalyst strike again?
One of the most encouraging aspects of Katalyst's September victory was the way she responded when challenged. She didn't simply inherit the lead or have things go entirely her own way. She had to fight for that success and showed a terrific attitude when it mattered most. With Lewis Edmunds back aboard, the same course and distance awaiting her and a return to Class 6 company, we're hopeful she can put those qualities to good use once again.
We know just how much ability and heart our filly has shown us already and there's nothing we'd love more than to see her deliver another performance that gets our members cheering!
Come on, Katalyst! Let's see that fighting spirit once again and give the Coral Racing Club another Kempton night to remember!
