Raceday LIVE Preview
Katalyst makes her second start of 2026 this afternoon, tackling the extended mile trip at Nottingham. Her first run of the season, at Lingfield over a mile last month, didn't quite go to plan as her effort petered out with around two furlongs to run, despite starting well in the hands of talented young jockey, Billy Loughnane. She should come on for that run, and take a good step forward following what was her first start in over four months.
Today's Nottingham contest will also mark Katalyst's first start on the grass since her debut contest in August of 2025, having made all five of her appearances since on the all-weather. Her progression over the course of last season was certainly there to see, despite only finishing in fifth or sixth in her four runs on the all-weather last season. A two-length defeat over seven furlongs was the highlight of those runs, a contest in which Katalyst continued to battle the leaders, until ultimately fading in the final few yards of the race.

Katalyst's Owners for the Day at Southwell in October
The Muir & Grassick team have opted to remove the cheekpieces that Katalyst has donned for her last five starts in favour of putting the blinkers on. If the change in headgear works, it should help Katalyst to go forward and not be distracted by the other horses in the field that would otherwise be in her eyeline. Jockey, Lewis Edmunds, knows what to do with Katalyst, having ridden her in three of her six runs to date and should be able to get the best out of her today.
Katalyst squeezed into today's field of thirteen, with her rating of 63, carrying the bottom weight in the race. However, Pretty Spirited is rated a full nine pounds lower than Katalyst but will carry more weight due to her age. The Kevin Frost-trained filly has made some marked improvements in the last year, having been rated as low as 47 before stringing together two wins, both over a mile, and two solid third place finishes between the end of last season, and the beginning of this one. She isn't alone in being a former distance winner, with Wondrous Light and Volendam in the field who both scored two starts ago. Joint-top weight, Saliko, is the only filly in the race that has won at Nottingham before, doing so twice over 1m2f in July of last year.
The going at Nottingham is described as good this afternoon, the same as it was at Chepstow for her only other race on the turf. Hopefully her prior experience on quicker ground will stand her in good stead on her return to the grass in the Midlands this afternoon.
Trainer Chris Grassick provides a raceday update ahead of Katalyst's run at Nottingham
"Katalyst heads to Nottingham today for her first run on the turf since her debut. We're hoping she improves having had her first run of the season a few weeks back and we've put Lewis Edmunds back on, as he knows her quite well.
We've chosen to remove the cheekpieces today and to put the blinkers on her instead. We're hoping that it helps her to stay focused on her task, and to aid her in not getting distracted if any other runners come upside her. Lewis will try and send Katalyst off from the front end rather than tucking her in, which will hopefully help to bring out some more improvement in her.
Katalyst has been in good form at home and we're happy with how she's doing, so hopefully she can put her best foot forward this afternoon.
Fingers crossed and good luck to all of the members heading to Nottingham today."

Racing TV Analyst, Chris Dixon, breaks down this afternoon's 16:20 at Nottingham, and tells us how the thinks the race will play out for Katalyst
Given she’s mainly displayed more temperament than talent it’s hard to be positive about Katalyst on the evidence of her efforts on the track so far and having been well beaten on her return from a break at Lingfield three weeks ago, there’s no sign that some time off has made a difference. Any hopes for improvement at Nottingham on Tuesday rest on the application on blinkers for the first time making a difference and whilst that’s feasible, it’s hard to be confident it will bring about enough progress to get competitive, even though on her very best form she would have a chance off her current mark in what doesn’t look a strong race.
Jamie Sommers ran well at Windsor last time and has claims at a track where she ran well behind Valkyrie Storm a few weeks ago. That winner has followed up since and with blinkers on for the first time I’d expect her to be more prominently positioned which is usually a positive at this track and makes her of significant interest. Pretty Spirited will also be up on the pace and comes into the race in form, while if they do go too quick in front it would play into the hands of Wondrous Light who travels well from off the pace and is well suited by races run at a strong tempo.
Trainer and Jockey Statistics
William Muir & Chris Grassick have had one winner in the last fortnight from their 10 total runners, which was Devious Devon at Wolverhampton exactly 14 days ago, but the pair send their first runners of the year to Nottingham this afternoon, which is a track that they typically do well at (7 winners from 34 runners, 21% strike-rate).
Lewis Edmunds has won three races in the last fortnight, including a 5½ length victory onboard Penny Ghent (25/1 SP) at Ripon two days ago. He's only had three rides at Nottingham this year, but has won on one of those occasions, taking his total number of victories at the track to 13. His strike-rate for the Muir and Grassick team is 11%, with 59 wins from 519 rides, and will be looking to improve on that total this afternoon for the main stable that he rides for.
