Raceday LIVE Preview
It's been just over two weeks since we last saw Katalyst in action, and this afternoon she returns to the course and distance of that last run, the extended mile at Nottingham.
Following a disappointing first run of the year, which arrived after just over four months off, Katalyst made the relatively short trip to the midlands for last month's second start of the season at Nottingham. Despite being the rank outsider of the field, sent off at 50/1, trainer, Chris Grassick, was optimistic about her chances and decided to change the riding tactics for regular partner, Lewis Edmunds, to employ as well as making a change to the headgear that would be applied. The combination of these factors worked wonders and Lewis Edmunds steered Katalyst to a fourth place finish, her best to date, off the front of the field and only just being reeled in during the final furlong.

Today's contest, although over the same course and distance as last time out, is a different proposition for Katalyst as she lines up against only three-year-old fillies, a combination of conditions that Katalyst hasn't seen before. Chris Grassick's reasoning for this change in conditions, albeit a slight one, is that two of the three horses that finished ahead of her last time out were a year older, and that experience was likely what got them there. Hopefully lining up in a field of similar rivals will aid Katalyst in showing further improvement, as she builds more and more experience in her second year on course.

Katalyst lines up against ten rivals this afternoon, with only two of those runners having won prior to today. The first of those is the most experienced horse in the field, Jamie Sommers, who scored in an all-weather novice contest on just her third start. Since then she's run a further six times and hit the frame on two occasions, both of which were third place finishes and one coming over today's course and distance. Top weight, Bami, is the second of the two previous winners, also finding success on her third competitive start in a novice race on the all-weather. With that victory she was awarded an opening handicap mark of 71, which dropped by a pound to 70 following a fourth place finish last time out. Lili Margot, Mimi's Magic and Safe Harbor all come into today's race looking to go one better than their second place finishes last time out, whilst Vitality and Morningtoncrescent both make their handicap debuts off of the same mark of 69 this afternoon.

Racing TV Analyst, Chris Dixon, gives his expert opinion on how today's race at Nottingham might play out and what chance Katalyst has in the contest
Katalyst found her form from out of the blue at Nottingham two weeks ago with a much improved display and it’s no surprise to see her return to this track for her next run in a race that matches the same conditions as, albeit for three-year-old's only (0-70 fillies handicap). It’s hard to pinpoint where the improved form came from last time, be it the slower ground, application of blinkers, being well suited to the track (her prominent/front running tactics are well suited to Nottingham) or if it was just a case of a filly coming good. Either way there has to be hope the effort can be replicated given such similar circumstances off the same handicap mark.
Safe Harbor may prove the one to beat after a good run on handicap debut at Newmarket, form which has already been franked by the third horse coming out to win next time, while Laughterintherain has potential after an encouraging enough reappearance run over this course and distance in a race that didn’t get to the bottom of her. Lille Margot ran in the same race and was ahead of Laughterintherain but was at a tactical advantage and wouldn’t be sure to uphold the form in a race that will likely be run at a stronger tempo.
Trainer and Jockey Statistics
William Muir & Chris Grassick haven't had a winner in the last fortnight, but have had two of their horses hit the frame at double digit prices in that time. Their record at Nottingham is strong however, with eight winners coming from 36 runners and a further seven getting minor places on the podium.
Lewis Edmunds has landed an impressive six wins in the last two weeks, coming from 38 rides, including one in his last ride at Nottingham on Sunday. He also landed a treble at Beverley last Wednesday and narrowly missed out on a double at Chepstow two days later.
