Raceday LIVE Preview

Katalyst heads to Southwell this evening for her third start, at a third different track, following a run full of promise on the all-weather at Kempton last time out. Having struggled on the undulating turf at Chepstow on her debut, the decision was made to switch her to the all-weather for her next run and the improvement was frankly astounding. Having been sent off at a starting price of 400/1, confidence in Katalyst's ability from the market clearly wasn't high, but she ran well above those odds in proving the doubters wrong with a fantastic third-place finish. The only four horses to finish ahead of her in the contest were homebreds from Godolphin, Qatar Racing and Cheveley Park Stud, as well as a Wathnan Racing representative that was bought for a whopping €340,000.

Everyone was very impressed by Katalyst's performance at Kempton and it gives the team at Linkslade something to build on going into today's race at Southwell. Following her performance this evening, she'll be given her opening handicap mark which will allow her to race against similarly rated rivals next time out. If she can match her brilliant showing from last time, we could be looking at a relatively high rating being handed to her, which could be interesting looking forward to her three-year-old season.

Today's race doesn't contain the same calibre of opposition on the face of things and is without some of the mammoth organisations that were represented in Katalyst's race last time out. However, there is some clear quality in the field, including Ghisa, who scored comfortably on her only appearance on the racecourse so far when winning by a length at Wolverhampton last month. Zarinca is another interesting rival, who fell just short of winning her debut race at Newcastle in September having been slow out of the stalls but rallying late on in the contest and Stepinmydirection had a similar experience at Newcastle in what was her second start. There are also three debutants in the race, Eastern Veil, Lilykoy and Pennine Way who will be looking to make a perfect start to their careers this evening.

Katalyst has been handily drawn on the inside in stall three, with Ghisa and Stepinmydirection drawn closer to the rail than her, which could mean that she finds herself in a prominent position on the rail in the early stages of the race. There doesn't appear to be a clear pace angle in today's race, with most of the form in the field suggesting that Katalyst's rivals might prefer to be held up, although Positive thoughts, who is drawn immediately to the outside of Katalyst, and Polka Blue, both took up prominent positions on their debuts, so could find themselves vying for the lead at the start of the contest.

The Tapeta at Southwell is set to be standard, which is slightly quicker than the Polytrack was at Kempton last time out, which was riding on the slower side of standard.

Racing TV Analyst, Chris Dixon, previews Katalyst's chances in the race and which of her rivals are most likely to be in with a chance at Southwell this evening

Despite huge odds of 400/1, Katalyst showed a fair level of ability to finish fifth at Kempton on her second career start last month. First-time Cheekpieces benefited her that day and they are retained, whilst she's kept to the same 7f trip on the all-weather. That was a strong race at Kempton, contested by some exceptionally well-bred fillies, and today's race marks a significant drop in class into a restricted fillies contest.

Of the opposition, Zarinca sets the standard having been beaten just a head on her racecourse debut eighteen days ago, finishing well that day as if this step up in trip would suit. Ghisa made a winning debut at Wolverhampton and did well to quicken from off the pace and is clearly open to plenty of improvement, whilst the Jack Channon-trained newcomer Pennine Way makes some appeal on paper for a stable well able to ready a newcomer.

Katalyst has a good draw in stall three and a reproduction of her latest effort could see her hit the frame in this lesser contest.

Trainer and Jockey Statistics

William Muir and Chris Grassick
have picked up two victories from ten rides in the last two weeks, including a convincing five length win for Starproof at Kempton at the end of September. The duo have picked up seven wins at Southwell in their career, at a strike rate of 13%, with two of those wins coming this season.

Edward Greatrex has been in solid form recently, winning twice in the last four days, including on his only ride of the day at Southwell last Friday as well as onboard On Message for Ralph Beckett at Wolverhampton last night.
