Raceday LIVE Preview
Katalyst makes the fourth start of her career this evening, and her first run since getting her opening handicap mark of 68. After showing an awful lot of greenness in her first race at Chepstow, she's improved leaps and bounds, finishing fifth in hot company in both of her last two runs, including an encouraging performance last time in which she was only two lengths down on the winner at the line as well as being well clear of the rest of the field.

Since then her trainer, Chris Grassick, has been considering his options with Katalyst, deciding on whether or not to keep her in restricted company in Maiden competitions, or to send her into handicaps for the remaining two months of her first year on track. He opted to keep her in Maiden competitions, believing that this gives her more of a chance to put her best foot forward and land a victory before the start of the 2026 season.

Today's race poses an interesting challenge for Katalyst, with some similarities to her prior three contests nonetheless. Despite having qualified for handicaps herself by running three times before today, she is the only horse going to post that has an official rating. Only five of the other nine runners in the race have been seen on course prior to this evening's contest, with four arriving at Dunstall Park as newcomers. Katalyst and Deported are the only two runners in the field that have competed more than once so far in their career. Deported may also be the horse to beat in the race, having finished a solid fourth on his debut in June, before being beaten by a neck in his last outing in October.
Of the newcomers in the field, Okiru was purchased for the most, fetching 60,000 guineas at the sales as a yearling. Darn Hot Gallop, out of the unbeaten Champion two-year-old, Too Darn Hot, could prove to be lively on his debut given his sire's form at the same age.
Katalyst is drawn in the very inside in stall 1 and that should help her to get a handy position on the rail when the field hit the first bend, which comes very quickly at Wolverhampton, so providing she breaks well the draw will be beneficial. The Polytrack shouldn't pose a problem for Katalyst tonight, given she ran on it well at Kempton before, despite the surface riding on the slow side of standard that day.

Katalyst has steadily improved in three runs to date and though she doesn’t look the most straightforward, she does have the ability to win a race of this nature. Her latest fifth at Southwell was a solid effort and the form has since been boosted by the sixth winning next time. Well drawn in stall 1, she’s likely to be prominently positioned and should get a good spot through the race but needs to knuckle down better in order to get her head in front.
Deported will be the one to beat after showing promise in both outings to date, including when a close second at Kempton last time. He’s the one to beat on form but there are horses of interest among the newcomers, especially Darn Hot Gallop who has a smart pedigree.
Trainer and Jockey Statistics
William Muir and Chris Grassick have put up two winners from 15 runners in the last fortnight, including one at Southwell last Thursday. The duo have also had four horses hit the frame in that time period, with two second places and a third. The pair are looking for their fourth winner at Wolverhampton for the year, having scored three of their 18 total winners at the course in 2025.
Kaiya Fraser has also scored twice in the last fortnight, with winners for Ruth Carr and Harry Eustace. The apprentice is on an impressive 37 victories for the year, although he's still in search of his first of 2025 at Wolverhampton, to add to his five career wins there. Kaiya has only had one ride for Muir and Grassick before today, finishing outside of the top three on that occasion, and will be looking to get off the mark for the duo at Dunstall Park this evening.
