Raceday LIVE Preview

Lady Mendoza had her first start since December at the end of May over today's course and distance, where she came home in a respectable fourth place. She led from the front that day following a positive ride from today's jockey Brian Hughes, and even though she was comfortably beaten by five lengths, she still showed plenty of encouraging signs.

That recent effort marked Lady Mendoza's 14th run for the Coral Racing Club, and remarkably, despite not winning yet, she's finished in the top four on eight occasions. The closest she's come to getting her head in front was at Musselburgh in November 2023, and that's closely followed by her two-length defeat on her first trip to Cartmel in May last year.

With that recent run under her belt, we're hoping she can take another step forward under Brian this afternoon as she faces a near full field of 12 rivals. She'll have 11 hurdles to jump, and the going is currently Good to Soft, Soft in places, which shouldn't pose any issues for our eight-year-old mare as she's shown she's pretty versatile across different conditions.

Raceday update from Rebecca Menzies

"We're looking forward to running Lady Mendoza again at Cartmel this afternoon. One of these days she is going to get her head in front and there's no reason why she couldn't do that today in this race if she puts her best foot forward.

It's really good that we've got Brian Hughes back on who does get the best out of her. They'll keep the tactics very similar to last time and be handy from the start, and I think Brian will be keen to try keep her down the middle of the track down the straights to avoid any hustle and bustle up the rail.

In terms of the race I do think it's wide open with the likes of All Under Control, Reel Her In and Killybegs Jet Lady all holding decent claims. If there's any money for Reel Her In for trainer Ben Haslam then you'd have to take note as he does particularly well round here. My other horse Ocean Legacy is better over further so I'm not quite sure if this drop back in trip will suit even though she is talented on her day.

Look I think Lady Mendoza is solid and I'd be delighted if today could be her day for the Coral Racing Club."

Chris Dixon, Racing TV analyst, previews today's race and assesses Lady Mendoza's chances

A switch to front-running tactics saw Lady Mendoza produce something close to a career best when fourth over course and distance last time and that form has since been boosted by the winner following up. If in the same form she shouldn’t be too far away in this mares only contest but whether she will be is open to question, especially as she will face competition for the early lead here if adopting similar tactics. Consistency has never really been her strong suit, though her form figures when having had 50 days or more without a run read 2523444 and account for all of her best runs on the figures, as such it’s also a slight concern that 32 days since her last run could prove to be a bit quick back.

Fortunately this doesn’t look a great race thought the likes of Killybegs Jet Lady and All Under Control have sound claims on recent form. Lady Mendoza’s stablemate Ocean Legacy and Varina have also been in good form but both got an easy lead when winning at Sedgefield and Fakenham respectively last time and would need to step up. Reel Her In could be the interesting one, especially if attracting market support as though she’s yet to really get competitive over hurdles she has been in good form on the flat and remains unexposed over obstacles so could yet improve.

Trainer and Jockey Statistics

Rebecca Menzies hasn't had much luck of late with her 20 runners from the past two weeks resulting in no winners, however, she has hit the crossbar on three occasions across both the jumps and flat. Her record to date at Cartmel includes eight winners and a further 26 top three finishes from 97 runners (£92,192 won in prize money).

Brian Hughes however is in great form and has been in the winners' enclosure six times from his last 20 rides. The former champion jockey will no doubt be keen to break his duck at Cartmel for the season though having been winless from 12. He has four rides at Cartmel this afternoon.
