Raceday LIVE Preview

Phoenix Of Dreams makes his long awaited pat Ayr this afternoon, after having an extended break totalling 217 days. He was last seen with a modest effort at Wolverhampton, where he finished eleventh of the twelve runners in the field, six lengths off the winner. Two runs prior to that, he broke his maiden when claiming a straight-forward victory at Redcar, where he was sent off as the 1/10 favourite and he followed that up with a solid third place finish behind Farenheit Seven, who has already scored in two valuable Class 2 Handicaps this season.

Unfortunately, the handicapper took a dim view of Phoenix Of Dreams' effort at Wolverhampton last time out, and didn't adjust his official rating despite the relatively poor run he had on the day. It is however the mark that he started on, and he does have form off of this number, with two second place finishes in stiff enough races. If able to recapture the form he showed at Redcar and Newcastle at the back end of last year, then he should be able to put a good foot forward carrying a pound more than he was for those two races.

Phoenix Of Dreams' race at Ayr this afternoon has been split into two divisions, and our four-year-old faces ten rivals in the second division of the race. We're delighted to have regular pilot Jason Hart once again booked to ride, and the ground report is currently Good to Soft, Soft in places which shouldn't pose any issues for our gelding having won on soft ground before.

Wobwobwob looks to be one of the standout contenders in the field, having won the Class 2 Silver Cup over course and distance two years ago and having took a step back in the right direction on his most recent start at Chester. Another major contender in the race is likely to be Arabian Cobra, who comes here aiming for a hat-trick after winning his last two contests over six furlongs. Hugo Palmer's gelding scored well at Thirsk before being hike up 11 pounds in the handicaps, but took that in his stride when winning again at Chester last time out. Only up another two pounds today, it's easy to make a case for him to run another good race. One Night Thunder hasn't been successful since winning on debut in March of 2023, but remains strong in the market. He stepped down to six furlongs for the first time in his career last time out and put in a good enough showing for the Gemma Tutty team to keep him over that distance today.

Raceday Update from Sean Quinn

"We're looking forward to getting Phoenix Of Dreams started for the season this afternoon at Ayr.

Thankfully, the ground at Ayr is on the soft side which will definitely suit him and with the lack of rain in the UK as of late, opportunities have been sparse.

Having been off the track for a little while, he might just need this run to bring him on and it looks like a pretty competitive race with plenty of horses lining up that are in good form and plenty of others that will like the ground.

It looks like a good opportunity to get started again and hopefully he shows us some promise and gives us something to build on for the season."

Chris Dixon, Racing TV analyst, previews Phoenix Of Dreams' seasonal debut this afternoon at Ayr

Phoenix Of Dreams returns to the track for his first run of the year under what should be suitable conditions at Ayr on Monday. Largely consistent through last year, he didn’t need to produce his best when winning at long odds on in a small field at Redcar in October and was below form from a difficult draw at Wolverhampton when last seen. In between those two runs he went very close at Newcastle and that form has worked out suggesting Phoenix Of Dreams could be on a workable mark and a break since that last run won’t have done any harm.  There’s also every chance he could progress this season, though despite those positives and having ideal conditions here it’s debatable as to whether he’ll be able to concede race fitness to his rivals and still win.

Arabian Cobra is on a roll and looks to bring up the hat-trick following a couple of narrow-margin wins at Thirsk and Chester, he latest of which has been boosted by the subsequent success of the runner-up. He’s unproven on the forecast slow ground but there’s encouragement in his pedigree that he can act on such a surface so he’s clearly respected. Wobwobwob looks a likely contender off a falling mark, having looked like he was back in form at Chester last time. He’s favoured by these conditions and the drop back to 6f won’t be an issue and the visors being reapplied for the first time in a few runs looks a plus, given his last two wins have come sporting that headgear. The likes of Tarlac and Taygar are also of some interest, though this race may be a touch out of their pay grade in terms of winning so a bigger danger could be Lion’s House who is unexposed, in-form and likely to be suited by the return to 6f.

Trainer and Jockey Statistics

John & Sean Quinn have been in solid form over the last fortnight, posting three winners in the last two weeks, including two over the weekend at Carlisle and Ayr. They've also recorded five top three finishes in that time period, with one of those coming at Ayr yesterday too. Although yesterday's winner at the Scottish course was their first of the year, they have had a further four second place finishers and a third in only eight runs there.

Jason Hart has been busy of late, riding 52 times in the last two weeks, with a decent record of six winners coming from those rides (12%). He also recorded a double at Ayr yesterday,  with one of the winners coming for John & Sean Quinn and the other for Chris Kellett. Those two winners gave him a total of seven at Ayr for the year, from only 22 rides and in his career he's had 66 total winners at the course. He's also recorded an astounding 255 winners for the Quinns, for the total time both before and after Sean joined the training license, with 11 of those coming from 109 rides for the Highfield Stables team this season.
