Raceday LIVE Preview

Phoenix Of Dreams makes his third start this evening, which will be his final appearance before being given an official handicap rating. He made his long awaited debut in April as a three-year-old, having been kept off the track during his two-year-old season to allow him to grow and mature before being given a run. He finished fourth on that day, with the race being won by Sir Michael Stoute's Never So Brave, who subsequently won a valuable Class 2 contest at the Chester May Meeting, and is now rated 101.

His second appearance was just as promising, as he finished third at Catterick in another hot contest finishing behind winner Monfrid (now rated 82) and second placed Bubbles Wonky (now rated 87). He finished his race well that day, staying on in the final stages to retain his position despite being short of room.

The original plan following that run at Catterick was to send Phoenix Of Dreams to Wetherby earlier in the month, but regular partner, both on the track and at home on the gallops, Jason Hart, noted in the latest update from Malton that our gelding might not be as comfortable on good ground as "he was changing his legs a lot and not really letting himself go" on the firmer ground at home. The decision was made to skip that contest and potentially aim for a race at the Northumberland Plate meeting at Newcastle at the end of the month, but the a change in the weather mean that this race at Beverley would be a good step.

Trainer and Jockey Statistics

John & Sean Quinn have been in modest form of late, with three places in the last fortnight, and one victory that came at Doncaster on Sunday evening. Before Sean joined the license, John Quinn had sent 615 runners to Beverley, returning 54 winners, 87 seconds and 63 thirds in his career, amassing £421,000 in prize money over that time. Since April, when Sean joined the license, the pair have only sent six runners to the East Yorkshire track, winning on one occasion and placing a further four times. The pair are also set to send up to four runners to Royal Ascot this week, including the impressive winner of the Group 3 Princess Elizabeth Stakes at Epsom, Breege, who is aiming to win the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes on Wednesday.

Phoenix Of Dreams' regular partner Jason Hart takes the reins once more this evening, having ridden him in both of his previous starts to date. The jockey, who rides regularly for the Quinns, has had five winners in the last fortnight, including one at Beverley just under two weeks ago. He's had 293 runners at Beverley so far in his career, winning on 26 occasions, and this year he's been victorious three times at the track from 16 attempts. Unsurprisingly, he's ridden a plethora of horses for the Quinns in his career, and in those 1,774 rides he's won on 226 occasions, with nine of those coming this year.

At The Races | Verdict

Rogue State
looks interesting on her first start for Bryan Smart, who has had a couple of recent winners, but 257 days off makes this a big ask and COPPULL HALL LANE is preferred. The selection ran well on debut when second at Redcar and, assuming normal improvement, she could take all the beating. Phoenix Of Dreams also enters the reckoning on form shown thus far.

Today's opposition

  • Voyeur makes his first start on turf for Charlie Johnston this evening, having finished last of seven on debut at Chelmsford, before running on to finish a better fifth at the same all-weather track when last seen. Regular Partner Joe Fanning is in the saddle today.

  • Coppull Hall Lane impressed in her first start, staying on well to finish second over six furlongs at Redcar last month. She steps up in trip today as a result of that and Hector Crouch rides her for the first time.

  • Rogue State is another runner in today's race that's impressed in her two starts thus far in her career, finshing third in both races for former trainer Tom Clover towards the back end of last year. She was moved to Bryan Smart's yard last month and makes her stable debut for him today, with Andrew Breslin jumping onboard for the first time.
