Raceday LIVE Preview
Phoenix Of Dreams makes his third start of 2026, and his fourth start without having had a significant break, this evening at Newcastle, as he takes on their straight six furlong trip for a second time. Those with a keen memory might remember the last time he took on this track and trip at Gosforth Park, where he was leading right up until the final strides of the race, when he was just passed by two rivals (now rated 92 and 83) to finish a neck back in third place.
Since that evening in 2024 he's only finished in the first three home once, however one of those was last time out at Wolverhampton three weeks ago, which was a good return to form for our five-year-old. It does appear that he's benefitting from competing in a stretch of races without a significant amount of time between them and he's certainly starting to look less green than he did when returning from two months off after wind surgery in December.

We're not certain yet that six furlongs is the most ideal trip for Phoenix Of Dreams, but trainer Sean Quinn would like to try him at least once more over this distance, on a straight and stiff track like Newcastle's. Turning a tight bend, like the ones at Wolverhampton and Southwell, might not suit a horse like him as he hasn't looked the the most agile at times. The team at Highfield Stables think that maybe on a straight track, he can settle down better and remain focussed on going forward, rather than what's going on around him as he appears to on tighter tracks.
It's unsurprising that several old foes of Phoenix Of Dreams are set to line up this evening, with four rivals from his last three runs reopposing here. Dc Cogent, who lines up as the top weight here today, and Blackjack both finished ahead of Phoenix Of Dreams' in his first run back following wind surgery, with Blackjack confirming those placings in the following race when they lined up off level weights. Showtime Mahomes was the winner of that penultimate race and lines up today an effective 5lbs worse off in the weights. There are as many as five course and distance winners in the field, including the aforementioned Blackjack and the joint-top weighted, Judgment Call. Northern Attitude is the only maiden in the race, looking for her first win in 12 races after coming close in her last three attempts.

Racing TV Analyst, Chris Dixon, gives us his opinion on this evening's race at Newcastle and how he thinks Phoenix Of Dreams will fare in the contest
Phoenix Of Dreams ran much better than he has for a while when third at Wolverhampton three weeks ago and though still comfortably enough held, it was a run to be positive about. Dropped a pound since, he’s well-handicapped on back form and the time of that latest race was good, suggesting that he still retains his old ability. As such he’s a genuine contender here, though being drawn on the flank in stall one may not be ideal, especially as most of the early pace is drawn on the opposite side but the main challenge is to reproduce that latest effort.
There’s some solid opponents to get the better of, including DC Cogent who is well treated on old form and ran well when second at Southwell last time. The winner of that race has boosted the form since and Bryan Smart’s horse looks the one to beat. Northern Attitude is yet to win but ran well when second to a thriving winner on his stable debut so should be competitive, while Spartan Fighter has been on an excellent run of form but this is a deeper race than those he won and the handicapper may well now have caught up.
Trainer and Jockey Statistics
John & Sean Quinn have been quiet since the turn of the year and have only had one runner in the last fortnight. Newcastle is a track that the father and son duo like to send their horses to, and from 84 appearances across their stable they've landed five winners with another 12 hitting the frame in either second or third place.
Jason Hart has been busy however, with 18 rides in the last two weeks and his only winner over that period was being a course and distance victory for trainer Ben Haslam last Wednesday. That was the jockeys 135th career win at Gosforth Park, as well as his third so far in 2026, so he certainly knows what to aim at on the straight course at Newcastle.
