Raceday LIVE Preview
Phoenix Of Dreams finally shook off his maiden tag last month after a string of agonising second place finishes during summer, doing so readily at the short price of 1/10 in a three runner contest at Redcar.
Despite his performance being nothing that wasn't expected of him, given his form in comparison to the other two runners, it was impressive nonetheless, as he showed maturity and experience to achieve his first victory. He tracked Sheriff's Call into the race nicely, before making his move inside the final two furlongs to take up the running. It was clear at this point that neither of his two opponents could keep up with Phoenix Of Dreams as he kept up to his work on the way to a 2½ length victory.

Following that run, his handicap mark remained unchanged on 77, which didn't come as a surprise given the quality of the race despite him winning as comfortably as he did. Trainer Sean Quinn told us that Phoenix Of Dreams was showing no signs of being finished for the season after the Redcar contest, and that the team would be looking to enter him in races during the all-weather season as long as he stayed fit and well.
As for today's contest, it marks just the second time that Phoenix Of Dreams has raced on the all-weather, after he finished second at Southwell over six furlongs back in August. He ran very credibly that day behind a well-fancied favourite, especially given it was his first time experiencing a tapeta surface, which is in fact the same at Newcastle, which is also a plus for our gelding.
Eight runners will go down to post later today, with Phoenix Of Dreams drawn in stall 9, and that means if Jason decides to have Phoenix Of Dreams sat prominently, he's likely to have the stand side rail on his right which could help him, especially in the closing stages, compared to having to run down the middle of the track.
Chris Dixon, Racing TV Analyst, gives us his thoughts ahead of Phoenix Of Dreams race at Newcastle this evening
Phoenix Of Dreams didn’t need to reproduce his best form when accounting for his two rivals in the manner you would’ve expected when 1/10f at Redcar last time. Though this is clearly a much tougher task, he goes into the race with a confidence boosting win behind him and some solid enough form in the book from earlier in the campaign. That includes a good second behind the well-handicapped Miss Information at Chepstow and another runner-up finish on the tapeta surface at Southwell. Those bits of form suggest he’s on a feasible mark without being really well-treated and he should be up to being competitive for all that I suspect there may be something with a bit more in hand.
The two most likely contenders for that are Fahrenheit Seven and Brummel who are both in form and look ahead of the handicapper. Top-weight Fahrenheit Seven looked progressive when winning on consecutive starts in July and shaped like he was in top form but in need of the run behind a couple of in-form and well-handicapped horses at Doncaster last time. A drop back in trip to 6f is likely to be a positive and if he reproduces his turf form on the AW he won’t be far away. That won’t be a concern for Brummel who has a good record on the tapeta, including when running out an easy winner over 5f here last time. He beat a couple of well-treated horses with ease despite not getting the best passage through and he turns up 3lbs well-in under his 6lbs penalty. Progressive at this time last year, he continued on that upward curve in the spring but lost his edge through the summer at a time when many from the stable weren’t firing. A two-month break and wind surgery have seen him progress again and there should be more to come.
With a lack of pace in the line-up the race could get tactical, but I expect Phoenix Of Dreams to be fairly well positioned in a prominent pitch, though the same looks likely for the main form horses.

2nd: £2,333 | 3rd: £1,165 | 4th: £583 | 5th: £290
Trainer and Jockey Statistics
John & Sean Quinn have been quiet in terms of runners recently, but they came within half a length of having a winner at Southwell yesterday with Highfield Sunrise who was partnered by today's jockey Jason Hart. The father and son duo are ticking along nicely for the month so far however, and are operating at a 19% win-rate from 16 runners.
Jason Hart has won three races onboard Coral Racing Club horses, making him the winning-most jockey that the Club have employed, including the victory onboard Phoenix Of Dreams last time out. His record at Newcastle on the AW speaks for itself with 105 winners from 989 rides, and his experience at the track could prove vital to Phoenix Of Dreams' chances this evening.
