Raceday LIVE Preview

The Club hit another milestone two weeks ago, as Phoenix Of Dreams became our 200th runner, and he marked the occasion with a nail-biting victory which was his first since October of 2024. He sticks to the seven furlong trip at Newcastle today which is no surprise given his latest couple of efforts which have seen him in a much better light over the slightly longer trip.

Phoenix Of Dreams digs in to win by a short head at Newcastle

Phoenix Of Dreams had been steadily improving in every race leading up to his victory earlier this month, so it was great to see him get back in the winners' enclosure after dropping in grade to a 0-65 race. He was only given a 2lb hike in the handicap for his victory, and although that means he is forced to step back up to a Class 5 contest, it's certainly a fair rise and one he should be able to deal with. Coming in with a rating of 67, he sits right in the middle of the order, with five horses sitting both above and below him in the weights.

If Phoenix Of Dreams does manage to claim his third career win later on, he'll be the first winner of two races in-a-row for the Coral Racing Club since Aspire To Glory did it between December of 2023 and January of 2024.

Today's field is full of experienced horses, none more so than the twelve-year-old Bobby Joe Leg who is making his 121st start for trainer, Ruth Carr. In that time, he's racked up 17 victories, of which a remarkable 11 have come over course and distance here Newcastle. He isn't the only other track and trip winner that Phoenix Of Dreams will be lining up against tonight, as Lord Capulet comes here having recorded all three of his career victories here at Gosforth Park and Novak is also a two-time winner over course and distance. Phoenix Of Dreams is drawn on the wing in stall 1, but this might not be as much of a concern as he came from the opposite flank to win here last time out.

Racing TV Analyst, Chris Dixon, previews tonight's 17:30 at Newcastle and gives us his opinion on whether or not Phoenix Of Dreams can go back-to-back

Given he only won by a short head, the handicapper hasn’t been able to do much damage to the mark of Phoenix Of Dreams for his course and distance win a couple of weeks ago and as such he still appeals as well-handicapped in his follow up bid. The form of that win has already been boosted by the third horse Pit Boss coming out to win last week and the time of the race was good. A flank draw in stall 1 could be a bit of a negative and this is a competitive race for the grade but Phoenix Of Dreams clearly has a sound chance again and whether or not it’s here, he will surely be winning more races.

Lord Capulet has had a good winter with three wins at this track and the return to this course and distance looks a plus, as does his draw in stall 12, while the form of his latest run at Southwell is strong. Camera Shy just edged out Anthropologist at Southwell last time and both still appeal as being well enough handicapped to take more races so this does look a competitive race for the grade.

Trainer and Jockey Statistics

John & Sean Quinn have only sent out three runners in the last fortnight, with two of them being on the flat and the other over hurdles. Phoenix Of Dreams was actually their last winner on the flat, which was 15 days ago, and he'll be looking to go in again this evening for the Yorkshire based training duo.

Jason Hart
has been significantly more active recently, picking up 22 rides in the last two weeks, with two of those being John & Sean Quinn-trained runners. He's won on three occasions in that period for a 14% strike-rate, with a further five rides finishing in the places.
