Raceday LIVE Preview

We're really looking forward to seeing Phoenix Of Dreams back in action this afternoon following a short lay-off since the end of October after finishing down the field at Pontefract. It's not been an easy year with our four-year-old gelding as he's suffered a handful of setbacks, and that's the reason he's only featured four times in 2025.

Phoenix Of Dreams won once last year during his 3yo campaign, but perhaps his standout pieces of form came on his debut when finishing behind Never So Brave who has since gone on to win the Buckingham Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Group 1 City of York Stakes, as well as Miss Information, who has risen from a mark of 76 to 100 since beating Phoenix Of Dreams at Chepstow in July 2024.

Phoenix Of Dreams gets off the mark at Redcar in October last year

On his fifth start for the club last year, Phoenix Of Dreams finished second over today's course and distance, only beaten by the short-priced favourite, Smart Hero, and pulling three and quarter lengths clear of the runner who finished third. Smart Hero is now rated 91, and the third and fourth have both gone on to win since, with the latter recently racking up a four-timer on the all-weather. With that form in the book, we've no doubt that Phoenix Of Dreams has the ability to win more races, especially now he has dropped in the handicap to an attractive mark of 70. He arrives at Southwell today off the back of a wind operation, which John and Sean deemed necessary after his latest effort at Pontefract when the vet identified a potential issue with his breathing.

Today we step back up in trip with Phoenix Of Dreams to six furlongs, which trainer Sean Quinn believes will help him after experimenting over five furlongs on his last two starts which didn't quite go to plan. Phoenix Of Dreams usually travels strongly in his races, and the straight six furlongs at Southwell we hope will help play to his strengths.

Cieren Fallon is booked to ride Phoenix Of Dreams for the first time, although it's not the first time he's ridden for the club having been onboard Cast No Shadow at the beginning of the year. Cieren has been in great form over the past few days, so hopefully he can continue that run this afternoon.

Racing TV Analyst, Chris Dixon, provides an exclusive preview of the 17:25 at Southwell and gives his thoughts on Phoenix Of Dreams' chances in the contest

Phoenix Of Dreams has struggled for consistency this year and couldn’t fare any better when returned to testing ground at Pontefract for his latest start. However, wind surgery since then could have had a positive impact and if it has, then Phoenix Of Dreams is handicapped to go very well on his best form and with a previous good run at this track on his CV it would be no surprise to see him go well.

Aye Gee El responded well to the application of a visor when capitalising on a reduced mark to win here last time and will take all the beating if he’s in the same form as the time of that race suggests. He’s got plenty in hand under his penalty but how likely he is to be in the same form is perhaps open to question. Vince Lombardi is a more likely one to show his form and remains well-handicapped on old form so he’s likely to be one of the main contenders in a race that could be run to suit him.
