Raceday LIVE Preview

Phoenix Of Dreams will mark the Coral Racing Club's first runner of 2026 later today as he takes on the six furlong trip at Southwell for the second straight time following his return to action last month. Despite his wide draw that day, he got off to a good start and was well positioned as they entered the home turn under jockey Cieren Fallon. However, as they entered the closing stages, it was definitely evident that he needed the run on the day as he weakened quickly after getting tired.

A racehorse often needs to have at least one or two runs following a wind operation for them to get used it, so hopefully with that opening effort under his belt and with more work done at home, he'll be able to put in an improved performance this evening.

Prior to his break, John & Sean Quinn opted to run Phoenix Of Dreams over the minimum five furlong trip as an experiment despite most of his form coming over either six or seven furlongs. This was because he often travels quite keenly in his races, so the thought was that the drop in trip and a quicker pace would help him get into a good rhythm early on. That, however, didn't go to plan at Pontefract back in October, and although he had a couple of excuses, the team at Highfield Stables have soon decided to revert him back to six furlongs.

Phoenix Of Dreams has been drawn in stall eight today, which could've been kinder, although he did well last time out to get into a decent early position from a similarly difficult draw. The good thing is we know he's usually slick out of the stalls, so if he can break well again, then hopefully jockey Jason Hart won't have any issues with getting him in a good spot. Having Jason back onboard should help massively given the relationship that the pair have formed in their eleven starts together.

Eight other runners will head to post this evening, after Massimo Blue was scratched not long after being declared. Off a mark of 68, Phoenix Of Dreams will be carrying the second most weight in the race, with Lovat Scout having the honour of running off top weight, although that is offset by Jack Nicholls' five pound claim. Lovat Scout was successful at Southwell three starts ago, albeit over the shorter five furlong trip, as well as being victorious over today's distance on his debut start 18 months ago. Showtime Mahomes and Blackjack are the only former course and distance winners in the field, and are two of the most successful horses in the field that head to post this evening, coming into the contest with six and seven wins respectively. Every single horse in today's race has been in the Winners' Enclosure in the past, although none have won as many times as the in-form Holbache, who's scored twice in his last five starts to bump his total number of victories up to ten, and with a five pound claimer onboard, Tom Kiely-Marshall, he could find himself at the front of the field once more.

Trainer Sean Quinn gives us his thoughts on Phoenix Of Dreams going into today's race at Southwell

"Phoenix Of Dreams has been been absolutely fine since his last run, which came at the same course and distance that he runs over today. That was his first run since wind surgery and sometimes it can take a horse a run or two to get their confidence in their breathing back up to speed. I'm hoping that's the case with Phoenix Of Dreams today because I was a little bit disappointed in the way he performed last time out and I did believe that he would run better than he showed here last time.

He's been training well at home, he seems in good order in himself and I know he needs to find four and a half lengths on I Need Your Love, who is one of the market leaders this evening, but I would fully expect him to make up most of that ground and hopefully get past him.

Fingers crossed he runs well and the best of luck to all of the Coral Racing Club members!"

Racing TV Analyst, Chris Dixon, provides an exclusive preview of the 20:30 at Southwell and gives his thoughts on Phoenix Of Dreams' chances in the contest

A short break, wind surgery and a drop in class didn’t result in any improvement in the recent form of Phoenix Of Dreams when last seen just before Christmas, so it’s hard to be positive about his chances in an open looking race. The hood being reapplied may help him settle better, but it didn’t have much of an impact when tried previously, so hopes of a more positive performance perhaps rest on a further 2lb drop win the weights and the possibility he’s come forward in terms of fitness for that latest outing. Tactically this looks likely to be run at a sound tempo and Phoenix Of Dreams will likely sit just in behind the pace. Ultimately how he performs will be down to the sort of form Phoenix Of Dreams is in and as has been the case for a while, if he does bounce back then he’s dangerously well-handicapped.

Saturn Severn is also on an attractive mark and may do better than on his stable debut in November when he had attracted some market support. Slow starts can be an issue for her but a good pace to aim at would suit and she’s of definite interest, along with Camera Shy, who would also like a good tempo up front given his keen-going nature but he's steadily working his way into form and looks ready to win soon. I Need Your Love and Holbache both ran well last time and are also clear contenders alongside Lovat Scout in a wide open race.

Trainer and Jockey Statistics

John & Sean Quinn have been unsurprisingly quiet recently, given that we're right in the middle of the all-weather season, and have only had five runners in the past fortnight, with two of those runners placing. The pair have had six winners at Southwell since Sean joined the training license and Phoenix Of Dreams will be their fourth runner of the year at the course, as they look to land their first winner there in 2026.

Jason Hart
has also been quite quiet as of late, with only 10 rides in the last fortnight. He does have a good record at Southwell, with 85 total winners on the all-weather at the Nottinghamshire course. The jockey also surpassed 50 winners for the John & Sean Quinn team last season and will be looking to add more in 2026, hopefully starting with Phoenix Of Dreams.
