Raceday LIVE Preview

Rockstar Icon drops back to six furlongs at Wolverhampton this evening, having been campaigned over distances between seven furlongs and the extended mile so far this season. Today will mark his sixth start of the season, having kicked off his campaign in early June at Nottingham, and since having run on both the turf and the all-weather in his four starts since.

Rockstar Icon's last three runs have all come over seven furlongs, with two of those having been on the all-weather at Southwell and Kempton. He's shown very good early pace in all three of those contests, but just hit a flat spot when asked a real question in each of those races. His run at Brighton, in between the all-weather contests, was the most positive of the three, where he was only two lengths behind the winner of the race, Krancjar, who had won over course and distance twice prior to that.

Last time out, Rockstar Icon was barrelling along in good fashion at Kempton, but as the field hit the cutaway on the track, he just failed to make an impression on the race when jockey, Callum Rodriguez, started to ask him for more. Up until that point he was travelling nicely into the contest, having always been prominent, but just couldn't sustain his effort into the tail end of the contest when the rest of the field began to pile on the pressure.

Today's contest has been split into two divisions, meaning Rockstar Icon will be lining up against eight rivals, instead of the safety limit of twelve in the race. Of the eight other horses that Rockstar Icon lines up against tonight, seven of them have won previously, with Ballsgrove Boy and Coast having won over course and distance in the past. Trust Sergei has won at both Wolverhampton and over seven furlongs but hasn't been able to win when both of those conditions are combined. Imola arrives on course as the only maiden in the race, and he has the added bonus of claimer Andrea Pinna taking seven pounds off his back in the process.

Racing TV Analyst, Chris Dixon, gives his thoughts on tonight's 18:50 at Wolverhampton and assesses Rockstar Icon's chances

Rockstar Icon was disappointing at Kempton last time though he did have some sort of excuse given that he sat close to the strong pace in a race that was ultimately dominated by those that were held up early (the first four home came from the back of the field). That form has since been boosted by the winner following up and having dropped a further 2lbs in the ratings since that run, Rockstar Icon is certainly a well-handicapped horse if returning to form. A good draw in stall 4 should aid his cause and this isn’t a strong race so if he did bounce back he would hold fairly strong claims.

There are a few more solid horses in the field, including last time out winner Ever Driven who clocked a decent time when breaking his maiden last time and is only 3lbs higher - he probably remains on a decent mark. Master Dandy is fairly well-exposed from his mark but is a likely type to run his race, while Lucky Man is dropping to a very attractive mark and could be working his way back to a bit of form after finishing a bit closer when returning from a short break last time.

Trainer and Jockey Statistics

Oliver Cole
has hit somewhat of a purple patch as of late, with four winners arriving since the start of the month. He's only had one runner at Wolverhampton since taking over the license at Whatcombe Stables, with that runner coming home in second place.

Kieran O'Neill has had 36 winners so far this season, with three of those coming in the last fortnight. He's had 105 winners at Wolverhampton, of which five have come so far this year. Kieran has only ridden once for Oliver Cole and that was onboard Rockstar Icon two starts ago, but he did win once from 18 rides for the Whatcombe operation when Paul Cole was also on the license.
