Raceday LIVE Preview

Although Tidal Force's debut didn't go perfectly, he did show some great racing instincts on his first trip to the racecourse. Our newest recruit broke smartly from the stalls and took up a prominent position in the field for much of the early going in the mile long contest. That early speed did however fade in the closing stages of the race, and he became short of room in the middle of the field when others around him picked up somewhat better than he did. When the field got to the two furlong pole, Tidal Force found himself sandwiched between two of his rivals and was bumped back to last place as a result. It was at this point that jockey, David Probert, decided to ease up on our two-year-old to allow him to get home in his own time, to keep the experience as positive as possible for our young gelding.

Tidal Force came out of the race at Haydock in good order and Hugo Palmer didn't hesitate to tell us that it wouldn't be long before we saw him soon. Given the proximity to the end of the flat turf season in the UK, we were always likely to see Tidal Force back on course soon, given that he was targeting a late summer start with a view to keeping him active during the winter months.

With the early speed that Tidal Force showed in that race at Haydock, it doesn't come as much of a surprise that Hugo Palmer has opted to drop him back in trip to seven furlongs. This should help him to maintain his position in the latter stages of the race, where he began to fade over the mile trip, and give him a better chance to finish strongly on his second start.

Tidal Force's first experience over seven furlongs certainly won't be an easy one, with a £30,000 prize pool up for grabs in today's Class 3 Maiden contest. Night Force, who heads the betting, is the only runner in the race that's already carrying a handicap mark, which is 82. There are also two newcomers in the field, including Green Star for owner, Simon Munir, who makes his debut for George Boughey this afternoon.

Hugo Palmer previews today's race and gives us his thoughts on Tidal Force ahead of the contest

"Tidal Force really seems to have woken up for his debut run at Haydock last week, he’s been fresh and alert and on his toes this week. He handled the ground at Haydock, but I just thought a mile in that ground was too far for him. Coming back to seven furlongs should suit and with a nice draw in 2, he could run a nice race.

Winning on his second start might be a big ask, but for all he finished last on debut, he did run well for a long way, and if he can do that again, it would be another step in the right direction. It has taken time for the penny to drop with him, but his attitude at home this week suggests last week’s experience wasn’t lost on him."

Trainer and Jockey Statistics

Hugo Palmer has been in relatively quiet form recently, but he did land a 10/1 winner at Chester yesterday, so will be hoping to continue his success at Manor House's local track this wekeend. Unsurprisingly, Chester is a successful hunting ground for Hugo, with the trainer sending out 52 winners at the track over the course of his career, of which eight have arrived so far in 2026.

Oisin Orr has also been quiet recently, although he was able to land a double at Newcastle a fortnight ago. The jockey will be looking to claim just his second career victory at Chester this afternoon, as well as his 57th winner of the year.
